Bottom line...............Gay is the best sprinter as of today, not 2012, etc. He would kick anybody's butt today, including Bolt's. Gatlin just beat Bolt, and look at what Gay did to Gatlin.

You know, I must say that I found Gay's performances singularly uninspiring.
9.75 is a kick-azz time with legal wind, no 2 ways about it. Maybe it was the broadcast, maybe the blue track surface, maybe Des Moines, maybe the lack of real drama, I don't know--but I found the NCAA 100m, for instance, to be much more exciting. Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't race enough to be very interesting relative to this competition.
I was more interested in SILMON'S race and his battle with Rodgers, and in Gatlin's knee taping, than I was in Gay's race.
Same with his 200m. I guess like somebody else said on here a long time ago, he is just the fastest boring sprinter ever. The Jamaican 200m final was much better than the USA 100m final, where again I was more interested in Mitchell and Young than I was in Gay.
Relatively speaking, for me the 9.75 was better than the 19.74, which is not even as fast as Pietro Mennea, and although fast, even the 9.75 was, well, boring.
He is so well-trained that his running appears clinical, without heart. I know he's not a dick and doesn't showboat across the line like everybody else has at some point, but you know what? Maybe he should.
Or do SOMETHING, I don't know what. It's like watching a businessman run a 100m race. Yes, yes, very competent, very uninspiring. Next.
But I like that about Tyson Gay. I like that he is a no bull$h1t guy and doesn't stop till he crushes everyone else.
Gatlin and all of USA destroyed this past weekend? Check that off of the list. Immediately start looking forward to world champs and destroying the jamaican contingent. No games about it.

Mrr82 wrote:While it's entirely possible he won't break 9.7, your comment is just flat out dumb. He ran 9.75 with two races prior and only a 1.1 wind, and a horrible start. Gay looked incredible once he started going. His perfect race at USA's with the highest allowable wind woudl have been pretty close to a 9.60. So i wouldn't make comments like that. He may never get a favorable wind the rest of hte season, or pull up limp. But if he's as fit or fitter with equal or better conditions, he should destory the time he ran.
His personal best... EVER = 100 m: 09.69 s (NR)
And? With the max legal wind he would have been close to that in this race with his god awful start. Gay has raced sparingly and if he got the perfect conditions, peaks and puts together a good race he will shock the world. Obviously it's unlikely all that will happen at once. But I give it a 50% chance he breaks his AR this year and 10% he breaks the WR which would take perfect conditions/race.

Don't get me wrong. I like & respect Tyson Gay, also think he's a phenomenal athlete with the best turnover rate in the biz. Also happy for him now being able to spank Gatlin, but how many times does Bolt have to prove himself? The only thing that can defeat Bolt is himself at this point. Thats if he doesn't come healthy and race ready (as he did against Gatlin). Remember all the hype when Blake beat him in the Jam qualifiers?
Show me 1 year where Bolt came into the summer not running 9.7s and had a successful season.
He broke the WR in '08 in NYC, ran 9.79 in horrible weather in Paris (with lots of other great runs), and 9.76 last year in May.
This year, he has struggled to break 10 and hasn't broken 9.9 in a number of races. He lost to Gatlin in spite of getting a fantastic start.

I know you're excited, and so am I for Tyson Gay. Yes, he may be the best sprinter TODAY. But that just it. IAAF WC - Moscow is not today, it's in August. Do you really think Gay\Gatlin\Bolt is going to be the sequence then? What, Bolt will be coming in third then???
Have you noticed the trend of the Americans laying it down at or near best effort every time they hit the track, no matter the event? It's as if they want to redeem themselves from past losses, no matter how small the event. The Jamaicans on the other hand, have a more laid back - just enough to qualify/get it done attitude. That is, until the big events come along and the beasts come out. This is especially true where Bolt is concerned. They are sleepers.
An in-shape Tyson stands little chance against Bolt in decent-good shape. Bolt is simply on another level biomechanically speaking.
Take a look at this again...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nbjhpcZ9_gLook at Gay's amazing turnover rate... a virtual blur of feet compared to Bolt's relatively loping stride. Understand that during this race, Tyson clocked 9.71, yet Bolt grew his lead progressively, taking 41 steps to Tyson's 44.5 to arrive at 9.58. Not saying there will be a repeat of this... the margins will probably be smaller but the outcomes, the same.

Are you just posting random bullsh1t or do you actually believe it?
Show 1 season where Bolt came into JULY in this poor of shape and I'll give you a sticker.
All his best seasons have come with 9.7s by this time and only losses to the likes of a 9.7 Blake or similar level Powell.
This year, he going wire-to-wire with 10.3/DFL at Prefontaine journeymen KBC in multiple races. Got run down definitely by an aging Gatlin after one of his best starts ever.
There is nothing to indicate that he is in the shape he has been in previous years or on track to be ready.
Sigh. It never fails... past discussions like this are all over this board.

Gatlin's beat him by the tiniest of margins, yet it's huge when you think about what it does to psychologically motivate Bolt come August. In a perverse sort of way, Gatlin would have been better off losing. He just screwed up Moscow for both he and Gay.
Save the link for this thread and I'll see you suckers in Aug.

That's true, but just to be clear it was May 31st.

And today is June 25th, what's your point? He ran 9.79 days later to follow it up.
I thought Mennea's time was at altitude and possibly drug assisted? (Though they weren't banned at the time, right? 1972)
Gay > Gatlin. Order has been restored. How come Gatlin has lost pace this year then? Not seen videos of him running, does his strides now look more like 2004 Gatlin than 2012 Gatlin? Never knew how he could get that extra flexibility in his 2012 London Final knees.

Oh we'll save it alright, and we'll have a whole plate of crow for you to eat as well, lmao
I don't know what the sequence will be in Moscow, and I'm not excited. I simply stated that if the 100 was run today, all things being equal, Gay would triumph Gatlin AND Bolt. You might as well as throw Blake in there as well. Gay is healthy and at the top of his game. The others better sort out their problems and improve by Moscow, or they will get beaten by Gay short of a false start. Pure and simple. All of the other BS (past times, wind readings, WR's, etc.,) don't count. We are talking about the present.
I'll definitely be pulling for Gay, but chalk me up to the group that believes Bolt will find a way to win again.

Understood, but what's the point of discussing today if they are not competing? It's not like they're going to have an emergency meet at the track tomorrow. Their next meeting will be in Moscow.
Nate, would you like a little barbeque sauce with that bird?
