He ran a 1.50/4:06/8:56 triple a couple weeks back. Unless he has fallen dractically off that form, he in shape to run a 3:58-4:02 type mile. That Dream Mile was in somewhat poor weather with poor pacing. And yeah it would be nice to see Saarel in a fast race.

According to Flotrack, Bernie Montoya has just been announced as an entrant in the International Mile to be held at the Pre Classic. Sub-4:00 being the obvious goal.
Honestly, I really hope they add Saarel to the mix. He blew the doors off Montoya at the Dream Mile, and I really think he's in 3:57-3:58 shape right now. That being said, if Montoya's in better shape than the Dream Mile race indicated, I could see him going 3:59.
Think what Montoya will feel after going to Hayward lol i could have went here instead i picked a terrible ASU program lol at Bernie

Saarel is done for the season, probably on strict instructions from Wetmore.
Why do you assume Wetmore would be giving instructions to a HS kid.

He's raced at Hayward before.

he should forget about the Buffs, to be a Wolverine at Michigan and be a great track star in the future. Wetmore
cares little for Track will get him injured.
Your high school has begun summer vacation right?
Bernie won't break four but he will mow down Wheating in the last 100!
I think it's stupid that this meet has both a 1500 and a mile as separate events. Great way to dilute the competition.
Integral to breaking the four barrier is future pacing that mile run. Montoya will eventually break four so he may as well get it out of the way now. Just 'relax, center and concentrate' , if that fails reach deep down inside, and think about who you are representing -- your school, your city, your state. Keeping that in mind Montoya should be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat:)
Too bad Jacob Burcham isn't going to be at he party. And where is Hamza Driouch?
It won't dilute the competition at all. Other than montoya the best athletes are all in the mile and the scrubs are in the 1500.

Hey, The Webbster is no scrub!

I would call it a guess, not an assumption. Any reason to think that he doesn't give advice to his recruits about what how to prepare for the fall? Saarel has run a ton of hard, fast races this spring. If I were his new coach I would tell him that he has a shot at much bigger things than a 4-minute mile if he takes a break and focuses on next season.
Do you have a better theory for why he would turn down the invitation?
Maybe he didn't get one? Maybe Pre only wants 1 HS and they picked bernie 3 weeks ago.One more week doesn't really change anything as far as getting ready for next year. Heck walking to the starting line with a 3:57 mile PR would probably do more from a mental point of view. Spending all of june chasing times would. And no I doubt he is doing bigger things next year. A top 10 in NCAA XC would not be bigger.

I understand they do this for publicity but honestly there is not a high school kid this year who belong in that mile.
Montoya might break 4 this weekend. I think he can do it.
However, a sub 4 mile in high school is not all that it's made out to be. First of all, it's just a mile. No sub 4 hs miler has ever bettered 13 for 5k, 27 for 10k, placed well at the WCCC or even won collegiate XC.
I think a top 10 at NCAA XC in the fall would be much better, not that it's going to happen.
I promise you that Wetmore thinks next year is more important than a sub 4 HS mile by a ton.
And trying to PR in a race with pros late in the season is not an insignificant health risk.
Predictions? So far the Brojos haven't made any message board gambles against Montoya.

In retrospect, it seems like he could have contended for the win.
