I didn't say I was upset, I said that a 19.9 adjusted isn't THAT encouraging, especially considering his 9.86 opener.
Tyson is a guy who we all know is 19.3x capable. He should be able to run 19.9 in his sleep. Not to mention that if he runs less than a tenth slower for an adjusted 20.00, everyone would be wondering what went wrong.
Don't be dazzled by any time under 20 guys. The world record is freaking 19.19! Merritt ran sub 20 and he would have zero shot at a medal in the 200.
Like I said, 19.9 is a good time, but hardly any indicator of Gay having a record season. His 9.86 is a much better sign, and given that and his past quick openers I would have expected at least a wind legal 19.70 or so.
Remember I'm a huge fan. I want nothing more than to take down Bolt but let's be realistic about this performance as it stands: it's far from special. That being said I wouldn't be surprised to see him pop a a 19.60 next time around, but he'll need way better than that to take down Bolt.
What was Bolt's 200m opener in 2008 when he had already set the 100m world record and had quite a few races? Wasn't it 19.6-19.7?
19.7w, with nobody remotely close and in a low key meet, is quite good. The is 19.19, but that's held by a guy who had already run 9.58, basically 3 tenths faster in the 100m than here Gay is right now.
