Thats a pretty balanced point of view. I see Bernie as more of a 5k guy long term, which is why I think he would be good at NAU or Colorado.
Why do you see him as a 5k guy? He is arguably in 4:00 or faster shape in highschool.

and webb closed in 55.1 in his 3:53.4.....point is and still stands, that in a MILE race, 54.3 is the fastest that has been done. not the fastest that COULD'VE been done. as you were...
what a stupid statement
1) I simply pointed out that a 54 point in a 4:08 race is not as impressive as some have made it out to be, sorry if that somehow bothered you
2) Webb ran on a synthetic track, had rabbits in the opening laps, and had people with him to chase on the last lap (i.e., not as impressive of a close as ryun)
Webb's finish was better than either saarel or montoya, but not as good as Ryun's was.

and what's going on there at drake hs with two guys, unrelated, placing well in 4:13/15 (and with a Redwood HS runner in between)! Drake never had such a strong program when I was running in Marin County. Drake had a 9:39 guy my senior year and Redwood would occasionally have a sub 4:20 guy (their record for 2M was a strong 8:53 from, I think, the late 1970s, Rod Berry).
Rod Berry is currently coaching at Drake HS.

As a high school student Jim Ryun ran the last lap of a 3:58.3 mile in about 55.7 seconds. He did this on a very chewed up dirt track (I have a high res picture of the finish). He also led every step of the way and had no one close to him to push him. It was a high school only race.
It was a good track, fast but cinders, the same type that he trained on. The last lap was 56.0. I ran my fastest 440 in high school on that track.
Were you there for the race? I had issue of the Wichita Eagle with the finish of the race, but someone stole it from me. It was an awesome photo. Ryun finished into a sea of people cheering him on.
