You have no clue how badly I wanted someone to ask him that question...I had to bite my tongue. He could truly have answered that he'd never run a road race before.

They said the same thing when Deriba Merga split a 21:51 in a half-marathon (yes) in February 2011. Leonard Komon's 8k split in his 10k WR is clearly better than both.
All true. It's tough to convey the importance of a number to the hoi polloi and still retain accuracy for this crowd.
To explain the details would have required a full paragraph. There is no record as far as I know - can en route splits on course points which are properly certified (stand-alone 8k), validated (for record purposes), and timed . . . can they be recognized as records? Does anyone know the answer?

Yes, "en route" records can count IF there's an official timer mat there, AND the athlete finishes the full race - the 30-35K world records are usually official marathon splits.
The latter rule is odd, but it does come into play - Makau's pacer was ahead of Makau at the 30K mark (in WR time), but he didn't finish the race so Makau was credited with the record.
No. The kickdown lap is usually faster than all the other laps and brings the average pace down.
Same on the roads. The kick at the end brings that final pace down. The pace at his 8k split would be slower than his overall pace (assuming he kicked at the end and didn't rig up)

So you're saying Leonard Komon ran >21:54 and then blazed a sub-4:50 last 2k? In a time trial no less? In that case he should easily have a mile world record!
There is no "kickdown lap" in record trials. And they barely bring the pace down anyways.
Too many I don't know what they mean by official and unofficial record on this thread. Simple: No record but a good run.

The use of the term official/unofficial is, indeed, incorrect. Unless one of the 8k splits from another race was certified and reported by the races, Koech's effort will appear at the top of this list
http://www.arrs.net/AllTime/AL_R8K.htmwith an "a" next to it. So, in that sense, it's not a World Record, it's a "World Best" if such designations are possible en route.
