This is the correct answer. Running the 10,000 at trials
will be, as usual, a massive waste of time.
Get the 10,000 out of the OG and WC. Adds nothing. Much less competitive and interesting than the 5,000.

Are we sure Ritz goes for the 10k at Worlds. He's training for Chicago. I know that he has about a month and a half in between, but he should be gearing towards the marathon at that point, not the 10k.
And let's say he does race at Worlds. Will he be in good enough 10k shape to beat guys actually training towards the 10k (Derrick, True, Bumbalough, Webb(?))
I think it will be Rupp easily, then True and Derrick will outkick Ritz for the last two spots. Teg won't even be in the mix with one lap to go and will announce sometime over the summer that he is running the NYC Marathon.

Teg has never missed qualifying for a U.S. roster since he turned pro out of Wisconsin, I believe. He'll get healthy and edge Ritz over the final 600m to make the team again. Ritz will do a fall marathon and PR again. True is running great, and with a chip on his shoulder after some bad luck leading up to the Olympic Trials last summer, but he'll narrowly miss qualifying. It's nice to have some major talent and depth at the 10k this year.
Ritz has already run what will end up being his lifetime PR at every distance including the marathon.
Ben True ran a great race on Sunday but finishing well on a ball-busting xc course is nothing like running 10k on a track.
If Ben True is going to make the 10k team, its going to be off a slow pace. Anything faster than 27:40 is going to result in True staying home.
This years USA champs will be the same as last year. Rupp pushing the pace with Ritz from the start to get it down to 4 or 5 guys and then a hard last 1000m because Ritz has poor finishing speed.

Derrick
Ritz
Teg and True will stay home.
Derrick--Jerry will have him ready
True--New found confidence
Curtis--The guy with the fastest PB of the 3
Alberto's crew will be effected by major Drug Scandal
Teg and Solinsky are both well past their prime.

I don't get why Teg is always 'well past his prime' at the age of what 31. Maybe he's past his prime in the 1500/5k but this is the 10k, and then there's still the roads where he'll be competitive. He ran a very good race at the trials last year.
True and Derrick are looking better (a lot better) than he is right now but I still see him going low-27s later this year.

Solinsky will NOT be competitive on the world stage (or seriously vying for US championships) this year. Why is this so difficult for people to accept?
Are we forgetting Alan Webb and the rumors that he is training for the 5k/10k? The guy has a 27:34 PR and is still the fastest miler in the world since the early 2000's (based on his time in Brussels in 2007, he has obviously lost a LOT of steps since then). It might be interesting to see what Jerry does with him, especially with a solid eight months under his belt of training with Teg, Lomong, Derrick and the gang. Just a thought
Let's hope True makes it to show that running World XC is the right move.
Look at some past champs like Lopes and Ngugi and the summer seasons they had.

10000:

Derrick
Ritz
Dark Horse: Braun (2nd fastset closer, behind Derrick, at the 2012 OT's)
5000:
Lomong
Rupp
Lagat
Dark Horse: Hill (As long as he doesn't spot the main pack 30m, he's shown he has a ridiculous kick)
3000m Steeple
Jager
Cabral
Huling
Dark Horse: Fam (He will descend out of the mountains with a 3 foot beard and crush everyone)
Since every other pick combo has been made I will come up with something from left field:
10000m
Rupp
LAGAT
Derrick
Lagat for the 10000m gold upset.
I see Rupp as the only lock over 10,000. Teg, Ritz, Derrick, True all are in the mix. Solinsky probably will run the 5.
I'm pulling for Teg, the once mighty 4th placer in the '07 worlds over 5000. Would love to see him return to the team here.
right now, in my mind, it would be very surprising if the 10k DIDN'T go: Rupp, Derrick, Ritz. People forget Ritz's 12:56 speed. If he's healthy this is his year. He is still young enough that sub 27:00 is a very real possibility.
Derrick simply has more momentum and he's younger and fresher AND he just beat Ritz at USA xc.
I love Ben True. Extremely gutsy guy who i think you can tell really loves the sport. I ran against him in HS and even a few times in college. I don't see him making this team but I look forward to watching him every time he runs.
Teg's indoor results are not encouraging. Nor is his decline apparently due to age - but he's really not that old. In order to be considered a favorite to make top 3 again, I think he needs to run something fast this year before the USA champs.
If everyone has their best day here is your top 5:
Rupp
Derrick
Ritz
True
Teg
Dark horses to get the 4-5 spots:
Luke Puskedra
Bobby Curtis
Also:
Tim Nelson
Aaron Braun
Bobby Mack
Ian Dobson (healthy??? seems like he should move up)

Do you believe that it is going to take sub 27:24 to make the team?
Bobby Curtis has already run 27:24 so you must believe that it is going to take faster than that since you used the words IF EVERYONE HAS THEIR BEST DAY.
It's good to see a few people mentioning Bobby Curtis. He came up a bit short against Ben True recently at the 15k Championships, but I think the move to the Hansons will pay off well for him. He also ran well at the road 8k he ran earlier this year.
