First thing that came to my mind was steeple/5k. I did that once in college. Stunk it up in a steeple (first race of the day for the meet) so I asked my coach to get me into the 5k, which was about 8-9 hours later. I PRed for the 5k. Slept well on the ride home.
With events like the 400/200 or even 400/400h, I often wonder how simmers pull off their multi event performances the way they do. Missy Franklin swims a semi final in one event then comes back 17 minutes later and kicks butt in another event. I'm guessing that it's because swimmers train much more like distance runners, even though they swim events that are much shorter (the longest races for most are what....4 minutes?)
