Death rates for police are about the same as other risky civilian vocations.

Boxing has a terrible death rate due to head injury but like football, combat sports are organized human contests protected by referrees, lawyers, trainers, promoters, owners, and media corporations.

For standard military branches and civilian 1st responders, intervention by risk mitigators has ensured managable fatality rates.

The only segments that I am aware of in U.S. society which have no controls over fatality rates are criminal gangs, the U.S. Marine Corps, and drug dealers.

Sports are a game with limits placed by Coaches, Trainers, Mommies, Daddies, Agents, Doctors, Wives, Sponsors, Owners, to risk and injury, thus sports is not a war with fatal consequences.

Lawyers, Politcians, and Bureaucrats limit the fatalities of Civilan 1st Responders and U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Air Force personnel including pilots, bomb disposal, special forces, commandos, CIA agents, astronauts, etc.

But who regulates the fatalities of Biker Gangs, Drug Cartels, U.S. Marine Corps personnel, Street Gangs, Daredevils, etc. So I think those are the "true warriors of society".

Less Seals die than any other event because they are the best trained, and well it is their job not to be seen.

Football players die because they get concussions and go back into the game. That is where the fine line of tough and stupid is approached. But don't bitch about it when u get sick later, your paid millions a year because you are willing to take that risk. In the same way special forces are paid more than other branches, because they take higher risk.

That's pretty inaccurate. My father banged heads with Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke and Merlin Olsen for years and only made tens of thousands. They had extremely poor equipment compared to today and you were a pu&^$ if you didn't play with a concussion. You would be cut if you objected to go back in and if you were really injured, you got smelling salts to wake up and a shot to numb the pain. The golden era players were the warriors and played for the love of the game and kicked a$$. Look up Charlie Kruger-he called a timeout so that he could find the tip of his tongue after he bit it off and kept playing.

The last thing politicans want are another Vietnam War with high casualties.

Severe casualty limitations are placed by politicans on police, fire, & rescue occupations including those given special forces, paratrooper, helicopter, and SEALS training; and on commissioned and enlisted military soldiers including airborne, seals, special forces, mountain troops, rangers, green berets, and para jumpers.

The Pentagon employs 100,000 mercenaries in Iraq and Afghanistan, so the politicians won't lose votes when they are KIA.

Since the founding of the United States, Congress has exempted marines allowing hazing, torture, deaths in training, and high combat casualties, so the politicians won't lose votes when marines are KIA.

My comment was solely based on the quote that is referenced in my post. My retort was about football and an ill-informed opinion about the players only. Until you know a former player who has committed suicide to end their pain; can't stand up straight because of compression damage in their spine and lives with chronic pain because they no longer have any knee cartilage, you can't speak about these guys and what they do. As was with my father, it was his only way into school and out of poverty, so I don't think that there is any sane person who would question the guts that it takes to go into combat or street patrol and do what they do.

After reading this entire B.S. thread word by word, NFL players surely are NOT war fighters, but cops and soldiers aren't hardly either in the old fashioned sense of the definition of "warriors". Rather due to risk managers and politcal correctness the danger they are subjected to is minimized tremendously to avoid casualties. Witness the low casualty rates of today's military and civilian 1st responders. One reason for the low numers are that the Pentagon substitutes it's own soldiers with hired contractors (which are not counted in casualty figures) in risky operations so that politicians may save face at election time. Due to public perception and antiquated laws enacted by Congress hundreds of years ago Marines casualties are tolerated (read 'ignored') by the public. Thus the only "true warriors" in America today are outlaws, gangsters, marines, and narcotics dealers.
