He is improving very fast in substantially all events (especially the PV). Can he make the US team this summer? But the more interesting question. Can he run sub 3:50 in the 1500?
It would almost be impossible to make the USA team this year becasue Clay, Hardee and Eaton stands in his way...they are the 3 best in world. Also, a full dec is a slightly different animal.
The problems for Beach are that:
1) He will not get nearly as many points in the 1500 as he does in the 1000m; although he will get a bunch in the 400 as well, so will a lot of other guys.
2) There are three more events and two of them are throws, where he gives up gobs of points; given that he has a weak PV (at the USATF level) despite three PRs makes this even more of a problem.
3) His HJ is weak by USATF standards (1.99/6-6.25) and his speed does not carry over to the hurdles (yet). FOr instance, he had a 7.03 60 but only an 8.15 60h (1.12 seconds) while Cato, for instance, had 7.08/7.91 Delta = 0.83 seconds.
Still, he did stunningly well, enough to easily get the Silver at the WIC for his total.
What is also stunning is how good the college guys are at the Hept now. In addition to these two, there is also Nixon (frosh), Lazas, Horn (got hurt while leading after five events), Olson (another FR). And. lets not forget that Eaton just left the college ranks. In a five-deep or ten-deep contest, the US might beat all all-star team (although there are several good deca guys that did not do the indoor that would score well).
