I went through 2 pairs in 4 weeks while I lived in Vermont. They perform very well on snowy/dirt/ice mixtures that are common on the partially plowed back roads up there, but they perform terribly on asphalt. Unfortunately my run involved a mix of both. If you attempt to use YakTrax on asphalt you will likely have my problem- both the metal coils and the rubber(?) webbing broke through from the abrasion.
If I were going to live up there again I would try those "Icebugs" or something- I think they make shoes where the spikes recede when you're on a hard surface.
