I posted in another thread how, although I am miler, I get more excited watching the marathon than the 1500m/mile. Ever since EL G retired, it has been quite boring. The maraton WR seems to be under constant threat. I gues El G's record are safe for the time being.
It's the theme of the thread but sadly it's close to the mark - if the IAAF and WADA remain committed to keeping PED's out of the sport then it is conceivable we might might be at the same stage as womens track world records where they will simply NEVER be broken.
People may point to Rudisha in the 800m but the 800m is a far more complex event in terms of energy systems where small incremental differences in pace judgement at different points of the race can end up resulting in a world record. It's similar in the hurdles where it is so technical that it works in a similar way. Perhaps we are also seeing some evidence that perhaps the 800 meters record has been held by clean athletes over the years and we are simply seeing a natural progression.
Realistically though the 1500/mile hasn't been as much as some people want to slurp El Guerrojou, the current crop of elite milers we have in the world are not short of talent or ambition but are really running on a different planet to what El G was and to a degree Lagat in his "halcyon" days (when he was caught for EPO). Noah Ngeny managed to run 3.28 hanging on to the back of the challenge and its once again conceivable that talents like Kiprop and Kpilagat could do the same given the same "pacemaking". But as for 3.26.00, well don't hold your breath on seeing that go down any time soon.
