Big difference whether you play basketball or run a 10,000 with a fever. The latter is a good way to damage your heart.

I watched the last two minutes of the game last night...not much happening...typical NBA. Lots of standing around, pushing, shoving - not what I call basketball. Could Dirk run ONE lap at Rupp's 10k pace even when totally healthy?
Why compare grapes to gorillas?
Could Rupp make a layup with ONE NBA defender in his way? I agree with you, I just think we should be fair and say it both ways.
Rupp would have shown up for USA's of Worlds no matter what. If he didn't have that attitude he wouldn't have made it as far as he has.
Yet another place where this silly analogy breaks down is that they have subs in basketball. Dirk sat on the bench during defensive series in the final minutes and did play less than in games 1-3. Rupp can't have Adam Goucher run a few laps for him in the middle of the race because he's sick.

Isn't it refreshing to see a layup win the game instead of a monster dunk, hanging on the rim and screaming like they just raped a village of woman and children?
negative.
I agree that Dirk would not play in any old game in mid-season with a temp of 101F. However, The Prefontaine is not just any ordinary Track meet. If Dirk were playing the LA Lakers and he had a fever, I bet he would be on the floor.

... This situation causes such ire among fans because it is a rare occasion when we get a chance to see the top Americans, and other world leaders, actually compete against each other. If there were weekly track meets that Solinsky and Rupp competed in, one race wouldn't be so important to the fans. Unfortunately, a race like the Pre meet is far more important to the fans than it is to the competitors.
