Since this guy was supposed to be the 2:15 pacer, did he have to carry that big sign the whole way like the 3:15 guy did?

Your comment ilustrates what I consider to be a typical misperception. Although there may be good reasons for a good runner to space attempts at peak marathon performances further apart (say, every six months, which would mean three peak marathon efforts over a twelve-month period, or perhaps even every twelve or twenty-four months), that is not generally because a fairly hard marathon effort is so taxing or takes so long to recover from. Rather, it's more likely to be because a more compressed marathon peaking cycle may not result in optimal development for a particular runner. Lots of good, and even great, marathoners have run multiple marathons of good or even great quality within much shorter time spans.
In this particular case, I might expect Eggleston to essentially train through the rabbitting job (with a fairly short recovery period), aim for what Liquori used to call a "quasi-peak" at the world championships (where he would seem an unlikely contender), and try to have a peak performance at the Olympic trials, which is likely to be by far the most important of the three races to him. Perhaps such a schedule would not be optimal for some, but I certainly don't see it as stupid, which is what an earlier poster asserted. Although I don't think that I would ever choose to rabbit a race, I can certainly see running a marathon in spring 2011, followed by the world championship marathon a few months later, followed by the Olympic trials in January 2012. In fact, that seems very sensible for a 2:14 marathoner.
He collected 9K- 1k pace setter for Olympic trials pace through 18(?), 6.5k for the win and 1.5 k for OTQ, plus expenses for the OTQ
He ran 2:16:39 on a tough course with 2 Kenyans going 2:17
He ran a great race

Wasn't there maybe an Olympic boycott around the time Rodgers was running his best? Jacka55
Excuses, Excuses. It doesn't matter. Rogers has no Olympic hardware.
Plus, the boycott has nothing to do with Rogers.
Ask Shorter about his favorite medal...
The Olympic Marathon was Shorter's third in nine months.
I was also in Pittsburgh as a pacer. I was there to help women shooting for the B standard. I'm very happy to say Lauren Philbrook qualified in her debut.
My reason for posting is to comment on Jeff Eggleston. I did not know Jeff prior to this past weekend but you can definltely count me in as a big fan now. I spent quite a bit of time with him and he was one of the most positive and humble elite runners I've ever met and I've been running for 30+ years.
Jeff - Congrats once again on yesterday's win and I wish you all the best at Worlds and the Trials.

Yeah, I get tired of mamby pambies like Rogers with their excuses. Just because he wasn't allowed to run in the '80 Olympic Marathon is no excuse for not winning it. Man up!

Maybe Utrata should have run Pitt instead of Cleveland?
What the heck was he talking about in that interview? I'm hoping they tried to edit that and it came out sounding like a crazy stream of consciousness and that's not actually what he was saying.
It sounded like he was pacing through 18 and then decided, hey I feel great let's finish this hard, then dropped the others around 24.
Congrats!

How'd Bill Rodgers do at the Olympics?

hey f-tard. i'd be willing to bet that any major marathon is just as competitive, if not more competitive than the olympic marathon.

Could you idiots at least spell his name correctly?
Better to keep your opinions to yourself and let people thing you are stupid than post them on the internet and prove it.
