In fact I'd call that being FAR more entitled to being Irish than Mo Farah is to British citizenship and definitely more than Lagat to American.
Actually Lagat LIVES in America; he has done so since 1996. He has chosen to make his life in America and that is where his future is. Cragg has barely been to Ireland; he has no intention of living there now or at any time in the future. Hence it is purely and simply a passport of convenience. Maybe he qualified on a tecnicality (mother) however far less entitled in my book than Lagat....
I have had enough of fing yanks coming across to the UK to run the 400m just because they aren't fast enough to make it in yank land. Bingham go home....
Not American
For most people, 60:49 is a respectable time, except for a few born in the Rift Valley, and a few more scattered around the world.I often wonder why so many people cling to man-made national boundaries, largely drawn up long ago by no one alive today, as a source of personal pride -- as if taking that away would leave nothing else left to be proud of. Is it insecurity? No one choses where they, or their parents, were born.Everyone should move to, or at least visit, another country for an extended time to really learn about its people and culture -- it would be an eye-opening and a mind-opening experience for most.My son was born to an American father and a French mother, living neither in America nor France. For which country shall he compete? Where he was born? He doesn't have citizenship. Where his father was born? Where his mother was born?

Mo Farah, Bernard Lagat, Mo Morhit, Alistair Cragg. I am sick of African-born runners switching nationalities just to have an easier go at records. If Alistair Cragg wanted a NR he should have stuck with the country of his birth and sacked up to run 59:20. Instead he goes the easy route and flips to Ireland and runs a pansy 60:49. No respect, no respect.

If his mum was such a patriot why did she defect the country to go live is South Africa? Mo Farah is 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000x the Briton that Cragg is the Irishman, he grew up confronting Britian as a reality not merely a fairy tale that your mum whines on about.
Sparkling wine was invented in France, if I make a bottle from Napa Valley grapes and ship it to France, it is still imported, no one cares that its mum was from France.
So the 1,500,000 who emigrated between 1830-1850's due to oppression and famine. Not patriots in your eyes!!
Genetics- have you heard of them? Born to TWO Celtic parents genetically he is not too dissimilar to any other Irish man. Mo, with all due respect, has two East African parents and was born in East Africa making him....East African.
Finally, 2/10
5/10 - quite well done, but you forgot to mention that African-born woman setting all those masters records.
Frank Shorter = German
Thanks for your correction - I have already pointed out to Donal O'Riordan on Athletics Ireland website that it is not an Irish record.
(I note that they incorrectly gave John Treacy the Irish record prior to Martin Fagan for his 61:00 at GNR in 1988).
Do you know the names of Cragg's maternal grandparents and where they came from - we should be able to find them on the 1901/1911 census.

Why would he have to run 59:20 if he wanted the NR of his country of birth?
Cragg switched allegiance because ASA made it damn near impossible for him to represent SA. Ireland's gain was SA's loss.
Once you born in Africa it stays with you for life.
snap out of it you invalids. the original post was a JOKE

Because the NR of RSA is listed as Ramaala at 59.20(?)

He was born overseas because his dad was in the military. Both of his parents are Americans.
I must say that Cragg is an example of someone taking the easiest route. A person that wasn't born and never has lived in a country is not a good representative for that country. If I was Irish I wouldn't claim him and I'd be pissed if he was given the record.

The South African NR does belong to Ramaala but its 60:07
The 59:20 isn't official(its not even listed on the IAAF all-time list) because it was run on a downhill course
Of course this is still faster than Cragg but makes the gap significantly less
Alistair does not care about Irish Records....
He represents Ireland because it is way better than representing South Africa. If he were to run for South Africa he would have to always be consenting to some corrupt politician's wishes if he ever wanted to run at the world championships or olympics. Look at the mess that happened with Cheune, why would he possibly want to deal with that?
Further... If he were to represent South Africa he would give up the Irish 10k and Half Marathon (althought he HM shouldn't count on a point to point course) but he would have the South African 5k and 3k records (which he doesn't have the Irish Equivelent)
Alistair is proud to represent Ireland and they have treated him well.

Hence my question to the other poster. Thanks for shining the light for him.
beautifully put :)
