Great stuff from Flanagan, also an excellent run from 19 year old Charlotte Purdue in 14th.
Terrific result from Purdue - has to be worth a low 15xx for 5000m (she is a good cross runner however, and more on the distance side). She is the same age (birth year) as Hasay, and beats both Huddle and Koll (could the same be said of Hasay at the moment?). I think Pudue has 5k/10k PR's of 15.23 and 32.36, and this result is better than either of those given who she beat today.
As to Koll, perhaps just an off-day, but it could also be that training with Flanagan on a daily basis may be too much for her, so Jerry S. needs to be careful how this goes (he hasn't coached women before I don't believe). Flanagan is a huge talent who almost anyone could coach frankly (she medalled at the Olympics under Cook as well), so what works for her won't necessarily be right for Koll.
Good run for Cuffe, but Gorecka was ahead of her (a year younger). Gorecka has run 9.16 and 15.56 (I believe) so that (given the 9.56 2M last week) is indicative (the 5000m) of the level that Cuffe is at as well - but then I should hope so as Doetzel and Schaaf ran at this level (~15.52) under Steve Gersten in Regina, Saskatchewan (of all places) at this age as well - and is the first race since last summer at World Juniors where she wasn't by herself (as in US HS races).
Fabulous!
When is the last time a U.S. senior team runner made the podium at World XC?

Well done.

Wow! Awesome- plus she must have run a fabulous last lap it looked like she was getting gapped/hanging in for top 10 in the 3rd lap footage and then at the finish is in 3rd! To quote another famous American "That was just Balls" Prob gonna be some serious american record breaking this summer.
.....
Right after her U.S Cross Country Championship Shalane Flanagan was interviewed and it was broadcasted with her and teammate Lisa Koll. Shalane said, "this summer I want to put my records way out there because I have a talented teammate (Lisa Koll) who will be coming for them in the future." She actually said, "way, way out there" LOL!
What a run! She was right up front the entire way, too. Fun to watch.
Anyone know the broadcast or interview where Shalane mentioned sub 14:30-35 for 5000m and sub 30:00 for 10000?
Nice to see a white woman beat all the Ethiopians.
White Hope? Or only white a**, MF ?
She's very sexy. Arguably hotter than Kara. Great race.
video of the race anyone?
That lead group Shalane ran with is over half of your WC and Olympic medal hopefuls and the two women she finished behind are probably two of the top 5 distance runners in the world.
The top 30 was full with sub-15 and sub-32 types, so just being in the top 30 is something.
Way to go Shalane. Great showing by the US.
Way to go Schumacher - the best is yet to come!!!
Incredible run!! Thank you Letsrun for putting this on the front page, it really is something incredible and totally deserves it. First non-African medal since Deena Kastor a decade ago and it really shows we have people who can compete with the Africans... she finished ahead of Meselech Melkamu, one of the only sub 30 10k women in the world!!!
I see huge things in the future for Flanagan... can she get under 30 in the 10k... I can see her beating Radcliffe's track career!

I also would have loved to see Rupp run XC, but it's not like he was the only one running around in NYC instead of at worlds xc, and your mask throw-in comment just makes you look petty. Rupp toed it up with 2009 XC world champion and Ethiopian great Geb-Geb, Mo Farah, not to mention 3 of the best Americans with Meb/Abdi/Hall, among others in the race. It's not like he raced in some rinkadink race.
He didn't originally intend to run this race until after his 10k got csnceled and he ended up only doing a 3k at US Nats and probably felt unsatisfied to have not got a good longer race in with the fitness he had. It's not like he said, oh i want to run the half and skip worlds. It originally was a strategic decision based upon his preperation plans. If he could go back in time, and knew he could either run the half or worlds today, he might have choose worlds.
The idiots who didn't recognize the greatness of her NYCM debut will have to eat crow. SF is among the very top now and is a medal threat in any event she chooses. Sub-2:20 when all is said and done.
