PSM methods should apply to nuclear reactor facilties also.

I betcha that's the last time the Japanese will buy a nuclear plant from a US company (GE) ;-)
Why? The plant is 30 years old and withstood one of the greatest earthquakes in recorded history. Not to mention numerous smaller earthquakes that frequently hit Japan. It's just that nobody envisioned a great big earthquake AND a great big tsunami at the same time.
I wonder if the plant only had a 1 year warranty like the GE washer and dryer I just bought. I think I will opt for the extended warranty just in case.
What a piece of shit design. No more crappy Nukes like that. I hope GE gets sued and goes bankrupt over their effed up nuke plant design.

The reactors are 40 years old. It was not designed to last this long, and it was not designed for a 9.0 earthquake or a 30 foot tsunami.
Also, the utility company that maintained the generators, TEPCO, has had issues with maintainance and accidents in the past.
Toshiba, GE, Areva all are having issues with these plants and reactors, but they are not to blame and legally won't be held liable. They will see huge reductions in their nuclear business though.
TEPCO will likely go out of business and be split up into several utilities, with the shareholders nearly wiped out.
BTW, most of those POS designs are in the U.S operating as we speak. In fact, my electricity is being produced by nuclear power right now.

I am little surprised that there was not an additional back up to the back up as I thought most of the critical systems had triple redundancy.
I can't cite the article, but earlier today I was reading that they had 4 power sources and they all failed. The primary and secondary power were knocked out. The diesel generators were the third and were knocked out by the unprecedented tsunami. Then the fourth back up was batteries (designed to last only a few hours til one of the other 3 sources could be restored) but they ran out and they shipped in more batteries but they couldn't last.
The GE Mark I is a lemon design from the 1970s. There were huge politics over the GE Mark I then. Those designs should be shut down world wide and replaced.

gotta a question. Why can't we just nuke the Fukushima plant? Does the nuclear blast effectively vaporize everything? If it does, doesn't that solve all the meltdown problem, since everything gets vaporized?
Sarah Palin, is that you?
