Cam Newton's likely outcomes in the NFL:
Newton will intially flop when he finds he can't overwhelm NFL defensive players. When you watch him play you can see him get antsy when his team is behind. This is like telegraphing your intentions to the defense. Newton does not have a poker face.
JaMarcus Russel: Possibly. Talented but couldn't cope with not being spectacular in the NFL. Long gone.
Matt Leinart: Most likely. A headcase who can't get his priorities together. Still playing but who knows for how long.
Vince Young: Outside chance, if Newton gets his head together after initially failing. Young managed to get over the transition but it took some time.
Michael Vick: Very unlikely. Vick is a smart guy and adaptable to pressure situations. I personally don't see Newton as the same type of person in terms of adaptability.
Jamarcus ran for 150 yards his last season of college and had a similar accuracy as Newton. The biggest difference is Jamarcus was also throwing to 2 first round receivers (in the same draft as Jamarcus - one before today was leading nfl in touchdown receptions).
Leinart was never going to make it. He floated his passes in college. Although many pac-10 hard ons thought he was going to roll in the NFL.
Vince Young was good but not that bright.
Vick was able to change.
Looking at all the above, I would say that any NFL team willing to take Newton, isn't going to risk him flaking out. They will most certainly reach out to the best of the best to help him guide/mentor him.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
