How is Austin? I was thinking of it for grad school. Is it a shithole too?

Flagpole, you need to read the book "The Big Orange Splot." Everyone is different, and i can accept your opinions, but damn you are boring.
For the record, my house cost $625 thousand and it was built in 1921. It would demolish your house in a fight.
1) I don't get my rules about life from a children's book.
2) Any $625,000 house would be better than my house that is worth less than one third of that. Well, of course there are some areas of the country where that doesn't buy much, but other than those, yes, your house would win. Good for you.
3) I actually consider my way the OPPOSITE of boring. I spend as much time as I can outside of my house, and I plan to spend even less time in it when I'm retired. If the house provides a kitchen and a bedroom and a bathroom and a place to sit and watch sports and a place to play my music, what more would I need? I'd rather take my money and spend it on traveling in high style brother...and I WILL. To me, boring people create a home "nest" that is so nice they don't want to leave it. No thanks.
I'm thankful I'm not as big of an arrogant prick as Flagpole. What a self righteous bastard.
I've been there- as far as going out your door for a run- not a good place to run. Even if the weather was suitable, it's flat as flat can be and not a pretty place.
You won't be running where the casinos are. The "neighborhoods" aren't nice at all.
I was there for a week and ran 1/2 mile loops around a housing complex that was walled in- $1 million homes.

The original site for Las Vegas was specifically selected because it was a hell-hole, as in no distractions from gambling. Also, Nevada was (still is) an extremely loosely governed state.
Hey Flagpole, watch it since you obviously cannot read:

Were you abused as a child?

I live in Vegas, and you get about 2-3 months of pretty awesome running weather, but the rest of the year sucks. My afternoon run today will be graced with 30 mph winds with the temp somewhere between 45-50. I know there is much worse out there, but you would think that right now is an ideal time to run in Vegas, but the strong winds are very indicative of how the weather is here when the temps should be nice.
As for the house, I bought a 1600 sq house for 117k and it is in a great area with a lot of running opportunities around if you like hills and dirt trails in the desert. There is only 1 school district in Vegas, and it sucks, so...if that is of interest to you, good luck.
If you are "fast", sub 15:30 5k on the roads, you would be able to win 99% of the road races in the Las Vegas valley.
Thats about it...
Agreed. I lived in LV for 3 yrs in the late 80's. The high winds and heat made life miserable, esp running. To run regularly from April to Sept, i had to get out the door by 6am (i hate running early), which let to various injuries due to my body not being loosened up. My running routes were mostly thru nice neighorhoods. There were no extensive bicycle trails to run on. I used the UNLV track for intervals, extensively. There was (probably is) the LV Track Club that hosted races and wo's.
And there's very little 'culture' there. The kind of people who think all-you-can-eat buffets and re-tread 50s-60s-70s musical acts equal 'culture' would like it. Sorry to offend.
I have met quite a few well-mannered people who grew up in Vegas. Seems like a good city for you. Good luck!

Nope, not abused as a child. Why would I want someone to paint their home a bunch of crazy colors? Sorry. I don't. Not sure how that leads you to believe I was abused as a child though.

I'm curious what in this thread I've said that shows I'm an arrogant prick. I assure you that I am neither arrogant nor a prick nor a self righteous bastard either.

If you're going to look in Vegas at THAT price, then I suggest Tucson, AZ (which just made the top 25 places to retire list for 2010). Prices are even better there.
Take a look at this 4531 SF, 5 bedroom 3 bath home near Sabino Canyon for $350,000 -

I have family in Las Vegas and go there several times a year. As others mentioned, it sucks for running. Red Rock is really the only place to run off the streets. Valley of Fire is 55 miles from LV, not somewhere I'd want to go for a training run. The wind is always present. While I love to see my family, I dread having to run up there. Arizona is a much better alternative: huge running communities in Phoenix and Tucson; an extensive canal and trail system for running; good housing deals; and we have casinos too. I was in your same position back in the 90's, I could have moved anywhere and I chose Arizona. Never regretted it. Good luck with your choice.
Once again, RENO, not Las Vegas, is the place if you like good running, gambling, beautiful mountains, high altitude, skiing, lower cost of living, etc.
Reno is the original gambling capitol of the USA, not Las Vegas.
Gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931. The man who introduced the bill to legalize gambling in the Nevada State Legislature was Rep. Phil Tobin, from Winnemucca. Rep. Tobin was the father of a friend of my father, who was also from Winnemucca. My father, coaching at Reno High School started Cross Country as a high school sport in Northern Nevada around 1973, with dual meets against Hug High School.
Nevada has great running, but yes you have to be well outside of Las Vegas to find it. We have a really nice high altitude mountainous plateau in the middle of the state where you can find great running, 6000-7000 feet altitudes and quaint small towns like Austin an Eureka. Great for training.
I love the running in Vegas and don't mind the heat. Can't get enough poker. Too bad I only get out there two times a year if I'm lucky. I say go for it! Only drawback is that you have that idiot Reid as one of your Senators.

Senator Reid is a great Senator and a great Nevadan and we are very happy that he won re-election over the crazy lady Sharron Angle. He has greatly assisted the Nevada gaming industry for many many years.

That's not true at all. Gambling had nothing to do with the origins of Las Vegas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Las_VegasThat's a ringing endorsement from somebody with 666 as their screen name. Ask Wynn and Sands how much they endorse Reid.
Not surprised that the inferior MGM Mirage and Harrah's corporations participated in fraud by influencing employees to vote Reid.
Can we say it one more time for fun? A week before the surge in Iraq produced a resounding success, and I quote Dirty Harry as saying, "the war in Iraq is lost." Hey Harry why don't you just stick a knife in a soldiers back. Happy Thanksgiving!
Well, I am from las vegas and can tell you it isnt like any other place i've been to. It feels like everyone is out for themselves and not for others. Its a little hard to find a neighborhood/community whose neighbors know each other, but they are there. Ive found that older communities house a greater sense of "neighborness."
I'd say maybe rent a house or an apartment first for a few months and see if its a right fit for you before you commit.
Although it is a vacation spot you most likely wont be living on the strip. Experience what it means to live here. You'd be surprised how often vegas residents do not go downtown and/or live the crazy nightlife. It gets old real quick.
As far as running goes, it isnt the best. People who say red rock is the only place to run hasnt ran anywhere else around town. It really just depends on where you live in town.

Hey Flagpole, read between the lines.
Did you skip school when you were a child?
The book is written for 5 year olds. I think if you concentrate hard enough, you can decipher the meaning.
Good book btw, I had never heard the story. I liked it.
