He's 27. He's in his prime if you ask me.
Look how well Lagat still competes at 35.

It has to do with the force-velocity relationship. Obviously if you pack on 20lbs strength training isn't a key in middle distance running, however, much of the gains in peak force capability are achieved without notable hypertrophy. In good sprinters (and Webb qualifies as a fast sprinter) additional strength gains do not bring additional running velocity.
Of course the other issue w/ Webb was the water running he added which was helpful up to a point as a supplement or in preventing/managing injury but eventually lead to mass gains as well, upper and lower body.
When you factor in the excessive weight training, the water running and the useless increases in land running miles -- along with the overtraining triggering insulin resistance -- you have a recipe for disaster (pardon the pun). Added muscle mass in a muscle compartment already prone to impingement, just not a key for this kid.
How in the hell did he run 1:43 if he weighed too much?
Most of his weight gain occurred following the good season. He started overtraining in earnest following the 143+/330 season.

Salazar said Ritzenhein is healthy now, but he is doing most of his training in barefeet on dirt roads.
Whose barefeet is he running in these days?
He and Webb take turns running in Salazar's bare feet. Now you know.
Has Salazar diagnosed Webb with asthma, yet?
What does he weight now?

nice, got a good laugh from that one.
wow, that was an insane race from webb in paris. hope he gets back to that.

You have no idea what you are talking about. He LOST weight following his best season ever and water running does not add muscle at all. quite the contrary it burns lots of calories with minimal stress on the muscles, somewhat similar to running on an Alter G. What you are saying is that he gained muscle by decreasing the amount of tension put on his muscles.

Webb's not back. He's injured. Salazar's blowing smoke.
Webb will be back.
To know what times he will run once he comes back, just use the injury conversion factors.
I will post if needed.
Possibly. However, I think using Lagat as a comparison is unrealistic. Lagat is an exteme example. He obvioulsy has been blessed with a higly developed physiology and has been fortunate to avoid serious and repeated injury. I can think of very few other mid+ runners that have been able to remain compeitive on a WC level through their mid 30s. Given Webb's history of injury/illness at such a young age, I suspect his body is not going to hold up that long. Unless Webb returns to top form in the next two years, we very well may have seen the best of him. Would love to see him come back with a roar, but I'm beginning to have my doubts.

I understand what you're saying, however, I think it would be hard to find evidence for Webb not being "blessed with highly developed physiology." Whatever that means.
He ran 4:06 when he was a sophomore. That's somewhat blessed.
BUT, you're point about Webb's injuries is definitely taken as for why Webb might not run as well as Lagat at 30+.
Webb has got to be the most talented modern American Miler I have ever seen. He has run so many fast times, and yes, he might have been adding on too much muscle...but even then, he still ran those times. Imagine what he could do with the right training, coach, head, everything. If he gets this down, he will run the world record in the mile, without a doubt, as well as win major races(world champs, olympics, etc). Look at how crazy his kick is in some of his races...he has kicked against a LAGAT who is ALSO kicking...this guy is made for the mile. Go Webb. Wishing him all the best.
This video is one of the best finishing kicks I have ever seen by Webb:
Thanks to you and everybody who posted those great Webb race videos. Such great races. Hopefully for his sake, finally moving away from home and his questionable lifestyle in Virginia mark a move towards a mature athlete. Such great potential there...
KISSME: keep it simple you silly misguided egos. Alan Webb would crush all of you at any distance. None of you could coach him any better than SR did. Salazar will help him find his roots. He will rule again. Oh and don't forger, not a single one of you bags are remotely in his league, so STFUp. Peace!
KISSME: Keep It Simple you Silly Misguided Egos. Alan Webb would crush all of you at any distance...today, yesterday, or tomorrow...check your ego's at the keyboard. None of you could coach him any better than SR did either and Salazar can truly help him find his roots again. Webb will rule again. Oh and don't forget what I just said (you DO need the reminder), not a single one of you d or s bags are remotely close to being in his, or in SR's league, so STFUp. If AW runs to his natural potential again...when it happens it will be a wonderful thing and we will all be very happy. Peace!

Very productive and informative comment. With posts like this, none of us need ever post again.
