also, 'mad world' is a tears for fears song covered by gary jules, since people were talking about it.

Motion picture soundtrack quartet cover. Original is great too of course!
this will shake things up. lyrics are moving IMO bc they seem genuine.
Cooley High
Kenny Rankin - Silver Morning
Katell Keineg - There You Go
And two performances from Letterman's show which you can find on youtube:
Antony and the Johnsons - Aeon
Adele- Hometown Glory
As a guy, "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics grabs me everytime I hear it. It's not like I had a bad relationship with my dad or anything, but it really could have been a better one. I think that's the case for most guys of my generation.
Barbed Wire Love by the Stiff Little Fingers is a compelling piece.
Loved this!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoSL_qayMCc
Gymnopedie No. 1 by Erik Satie
Smoke--Ben Folds. Especially the version with the WASO.

That's a pretty good one, really that whole soundtrack is great. Stay With Me is another good one from it, it's short but you can loop it and it blends together nicely with crossfade if you need more.
Aphex Twin - Rhubarb is amazing:

Definitely a good one.
As for Party in the USA, I mean...it's alright ;) It makes me want to move (out of the country), but it doesn't move me.
100 bottles of beer on the wall, I can't deny, is a great song to sing on roadtrips. It's not moving either, though.
How is getting an entire bar to start singing 100 bottles of beer on the wall NOT moving?
I liked that song someone posted by Levon Helm. I also find that Sigur Ros can stir up a lot of emotion in me, even if I can't understand what they're saying.
One song writer whose music often moves me is Richard Buckner. Although most of his albums have had great critical acclaim, he fairly unknown. I guess if I had to pick one song to throw out there it would be "Once". But I can't find it on Youtube, so here's another one:

Also, I'm not a huge fan of Christian music, but there is one guy I really like named Rich Mullins (died in 1997). Many of his songs move me, but again if I had to pick one I'd say "Hard to Get". Only a demo of the song was recorded before he died. I can't find a link online, but if you like Christian music, check it out.
Seriously, people. These are awesome. You guys are great. Keep them coming.
I always like this song:
It's a bit 80's-dated, but words and melody are very moving:

Can't provide a link for my favorite classical, because no one's put it on youtube yet and there's only a 28 second snippet on amazon, nothing on naxos or classical.com.
It's the movement from Dominic Argento's Andree Expedition for baritone and piano called "Anna's Birthday". If you know the story of the expedition and have experienced the rest of the song cycle, this movement is beyond moving. I cried many times practicing it and had to struggle not to cry while performing it.
I am gonna have to start listening to classical music more often.

That is indeed the correct answer.
