Where did all of my descriptions of the potential demise of the record come from? I thought someone would get the reference.

Monty Python parrot sketch. what do i win?
Some ILers actually had the course measured. They were tired of uniformed non-ILer's saying 2.9.
Depends on measurement standard. High school standard via middle of course is 3.02. Shortest possible route (USATF standard?) is 2.976.

Thank you.
I'm near the IL area that Veribizkas raced in. I also ran at about the same time of the race.
I'm not into wind excuses, and still am not. But it was definitely windier than normal. But far from impossible or gusts, etc.. Just a little more windy than normal. And forget the "hot" aspect. The temp was awesome.

IL outsourced measuring to the Stanford crew. After measuring, they were lol and guaranteeing a course record.
Lukas definitely gave it his all. I wonder how much the temperature had to do with it. The 2A race leader lost it at 2.5 Miles. He was wobbling, slowed to a stagger and dropped from 1st to 70+ place, pulling his team from 1st to 4th place. This was followed by the girls 3a race where 2 girls had similar issues where they crawled the last 100 meters.
Can the weather have that much of an effect on a 3 mile race?
You're right. Hard to believe that it's 5k or 3 mi. Times are ridiculous and it's not depth. I don't care how many Chris Derricks have come through Illinois. That's immaterial. 14:07 on a cross country course by a HS runner means the distance is way off.
Any videos of these races?

MSCoach: He ran a 14:18 indoor 5K last year! So you may want to rethink things. I guess the track was short too.
Lukas could only manage to run as fast as Jager did when he was a senior..too bad
Oh and if he runs faster than Derrick and Virgin next year or the year after it will be highly questionable. As a junior next year Lukas will actually be older then Derrick was as a Senior when he ran 13:52....just something to think about
The best thing is that he's a triathlete. Guess some of them can run after all ...

The course is average as far as difficulty. I was at the Colorado state championship today, fast course. Packed dirt, with hardly a hill. Ran Detweiller plenty back in the day, I call it 3 and it has gradual uphill with gradual downhill (although hardly hills). Illinois has some amazing talent and is deep. Gary, Sage, Broe, Torres, Derrick; the list goes on and on with all the great runners that state churns out at any level!
average? i ran at detweiller and its incredibly easy. right now, i'm running in connecticut and let me tell you that every course out here is harder than detweiller. if it is average, what is fast. detweiller is a race track compared to any course i've run on this year.

werent Mottram and Webb triathletes?
He is going to graduate as a 19 year old, so he is only 1 year older than normal graduating age and probably isnt even the oldest person in his grade.
Sorry guys wrote:

I hate it when people on these boards get so picky and critical. To paraphrase for Let's Run: Those who can, run. Those who can't, get on LR boards and criticize. I ran the same course (it's changed - but only a little) 20 years ago. Our coach measured it - down the middle - at about 15 yards OVER 3 miles. If you run the tangents maybe it's a few yards short. I was a 9:20 high school 2-miler. I ran 15:03. It's a fast course, the crowd is always right on top of you and cheering their lungs out. It's almost like an indoor track race. It can be that loud. Illinois has a tradition of distance running and it's taken very seriously. Illinois is one of the most populous states. Outside of California, it probably turns out the most distance runners who succeed at the college level. In the last few years Derrick, Ulrey, Jager, Thode - all came from IL. Lukas will be great - if he stays healthy. He seems to be put in high miles whether it's on the bike or on his feet. And if you don't think "he's from IL" then you are part of the crew that thinks Meb isn't an American and shame on you.
In mentioning the crowd -- that was a great benefit of the weather yesterday is that there were just an insane number of people there. I watched the races from the finish area and looking down towards the bottom of the hill I couldn't believe the size of the crowd down there. It was definitely really loud too.
its the same course as the past three years, and so far he's about barely behind chris derrick 13:56 time he ran his senior year in 2007.
the kid is on pace.
lets make him a citizen and hope he's not on something.

Not quite right. I know PLENTY of seniors who were 17 all through their senior years, and several were top runners. Many ran the entire x-c season their senior year while still 16. Franklyn Sanchez was still 16 when he ran 8:49 indoors (turned 17 just after that).
Verzbicas will turn 19 EARLY in his senior year (dec or jan?) That is a full TWO years older than many seniors, and a year older than the OLDEST seniors ( I was one of the oldest in my grade, and I turned 18 in early winter of my senior year). And he has trained professionally for a few years.
He is a brilliant runner no matter what his age is, but it is a joke to talk about "class/grade" records with him. If we are going to compare him to past runners of the same grade, nobody should consider him a soph this year. He should be considered a junior bare minimum this year, if not a senior.
Anything he does as a senior I will not consider a high school record or time.
