I would be curious to know what her training log looks like. She must be busting her ass. Did you see she hit halfway yesterday in 1:22? She was looking to run much faster than 2:49 is my bet. She has not lost one ounce of her competitive drive. No wonder Sev said she was the toughest athlete he ever worked with. Anybody age grade her performance?
At the post-race press conference she said she has never DNF'd (even when knocked down) and never run a marathon slower than 3 hours. Wow.

Well so have I.
I think people should be called what they want to be called. And I own 57 country clubs and have run 31 sub 2:10 marathons. Really.
This is confusing -- before she finished the TV commentators said she was at 3:15, and was well off the record. But I saw the clock at 2:49. They said she finished in 3:30. They were assuming she started with the elite women's field earlier. Did she, or didn't she?
MarathonGuide.com lists het time as 2:49:09 and
they give that an age grade equivalent of 2:19:33.
Amazing.
Joanie's run was awesome! She also broke the NYC Marathon 50-plus division record of 2:53:53 set by S. Rae Baymiller in 1993.
Very impressive!
6th american. Boulet is not american

I wouldn't trust that list. I know Marion Irvine ran 2:51 at Cal International in '83 at age 54.
Remarkable. Guts and grit. Ol' school Down'Easter.
A little talent in there somewhere doesn't hurt, either.
We can all learn from her example.
A teammate of mine has had the privilege to run with her several times. He has come back from winter break on multiple occasions and told us about how he got his ass kicked by Joanie on a long run in the snow up in Maine. Apparently she still runs sub 7 pace on a lot of her normal days. Unreal.
She is the female brett farve. Great in her prime, but now just runs to get attention.
Talking of retiring but always finds a way to bust into someone else's spotlight. It's kinda sad really.
Whose spotlight?
As someone who saw her at races in the 80s and ran along with her in a marathon one time, I have to admit I was shocked at how old she looked. Looked like an 'old lady'. Those Maine winters must be tough on the skin. (not questioning her talent, race or guts; they are top-drawer; just surprised at her face, looks-wise). I doubt that she cares!
Joan is my favorite person on the planet that I haven't met. I was waiting at the airport to pick up my 13 year old daughter from German camp when then Miss Benoit was winning the first Olympic marathon for women.
I had my 50 year high school reunion in September. I smiled at the person who said Joan looked old. Just wait half a century. As for form, you should have seen Jim Ryun, world record holder in the mile for 11 years.
Bret Favre is certainly one of the best twenty or so quarterbacks on the planet. He's probably getting paid millions so if you want to take cheap shots at him, go ahead.
I don't think Joan ever got rich from running, but even if she did, she's always carried herself with dignity. I'd like to congratulate her on another remarkable achievement.

All the 50+ women American women.. they always get a lot of attention. But, now that attention-whore, Joanie is taking all of it away.
Obviously everyone hates her.
UUUmmm..., ever heard of Satchel Paige ?
Are you kidding?
She's made plenty of coin and still does today. You don't think she flies to all those events and appearances for free now, do you??
she was at my college convocation, along with her family, on a panel with Roger Bannister back in 1987 or 1988. She was incredibly nice, as was her husband. In retrospect, I should have asked her about her training, as I didn't have a freaking clue back then.
She must have been in the wave one start at 9:40 (not the elite women at 9:10), because two of my teammates in the local competitive start were apparently in the picture with her on tv for a number of miles near the end.

Cal Int'l is not record-eligible. Too much elevation drop. Still an amazing time though.
