The Summer Olympic Games and IAAF Outdoor Championships are the big medals. The others are recognized as small regional meets and the best runners aren't there.

Oh dear... so you're saying the best runners will be at the Olympic Games and IAAF Outdoor Championships instead? So which of these Olympic and IAAF Outdoor Championships are on during commonwealth games years?
Might pay to look up the meaning of "regional" too.
The Summer Olympic Games and IAAF Outdoor Championships are the big medals. The others are recognized as small regional meets and the best runners aren't there. Those are the only two world events that every country and runner are open to. Runners are defined by how many Oly and IAAF Out WC medals they have. The others don't count. That's the way it is.
May not be as big as Oly or WC but he ran sub 13 in a championship race and was behid only Augustine Choge and in front of Benjamin Limo (reigning WC at the time). Results:
Gold Augustine Choge Kenya 12:56.41
Silver Craig Mottram Australia 12:58.19
Bronze Benjamin Limo Kenya 13:05.30
4 Joseph Ebuya Kenya 13:05.89
5 Fabian Joseph Naasi Tanzania 13:12.76
6 Damian Chopa Tanzania 13:24.03
7 Moses Kipsiro Uganda 13:25.06
8 Dickson Marwa Mkami Tanzania 13:26.43
9 Mohamed Farah England 13:40.53
10 Tonny Wamulwa Zambia 13:40.78
Some decent names in there so the race is definitely worth a mention at the very least. And the race walking comment is just ridiculously stupid.
P.S. I was there for this race at the MCG where there were 100,000 people cheering for the mullet to win. Don't get that at every small regional race.

Mottram ACTUALLY BEAT BEKELE. He didn't lose to him by so or so seconds. He wasn't gaining on him and still lost like someone we all know. He actually beat one of the greatest if not the greatest distance runner of all time. So all you Americans should stop disrespecting Mottram.
I never disrespected Mottram. He got a bronze at Worlds so I give him crazy props. I'm aware he's beaten some very good people. I don't think we've seen Ritz's full potential just yet. I think he will win a few races with major competition in the next couple of years. He's only just started working with Alberto Salazar. He got bronze at the world half and that more than convinces me he's going to step it up more. I think he has the potential to make just as much of an impact as Mottram has made. I think its great that he beat Bekele once but I'm not going to deify him for that. Now if he beat Bekele in a world championship, track or XC that would be another thing altogether. Dathan and Buster's 5ks aren't that far off and I see Dathan going sub 27 at some point. If Dathan ever wins another world championship or Oly medal, I might give him the edge over Buster as far as career accomplishments go.
This whole back-and-forth about the meaningfulness of Commonwealths started because someone was nitpicking about the thread title, which mentions that Mottram is "known for his medals." Notice that it doesn't says "his medals at Worlds, Olympics and other equivalent competitions." Just "medals."
Track fans remember Mottram's Commonwealth silver because of who he ran against and how fast they ran. He's known for that medal. No one said it's as good as an Olympic or WC medal, and you're free to rank Commonwealths lower than your local Turkey Trot -- but you can't deny the objective fact that Mottram is known for (among other things) that medal performance.
Can you ever see Ritz or Teg in this position?
wait, when did Mottram beat Bekele? I know he beat TARIKU Bekele, but did he really beat Kenenisa?
Mottram has one medal from 2005 Helsinki. He does not have medals. That's no small accomplishment. He can get a coaching gig at a DI school with just that and after a few athletes make NCAAs he's guranteed to be offered a head coaching gig somewhere while thousands of other coaches get nowhere. That's the advantage an IAAF Outdoor or Olympic medalist has.
He beat Kenny B in the 2006 World Cup for 3000m running 7:32

Well said, and well written. Letsrun would be a lot more enjoyable if there were more people like you on it, instead of the illiterate morons that are here.
Get ready!

At the tail-end of the season when Bekele clearly had no form at all. Mottram isn't nor hasn't been in Bekele's class when Bekele is in shape.
dude, of course mottram isnt as good as bekele, I hope that isnt what he meant, but even so there arent a lot of guys who can say they have beaten the king, let alone a big baby faced white boy beating him.
i dont think it really matters how he beat him, he just did. He had to run 7.32 so whether Bekele was tired or sick or whatever other excuse he used, Mottram beat arguably the greatest distance runner ever in a head to head race. Mottram is a freak and its gonna take alot for Ritz to get close to emulating the runner Mottram has been so far in his career.
Of course Mottram is not a better runner. But on the day he was better than Bekele in a championship race (yes the world cup is a championship).
Not many people have beaten Bekele. But the most important fact is that he went into the race trying to beat him; unlike all the other white runners that see it as an achievement to just get near him and never throw it down.
I think Teg is more likely to be the white man to beat over 5km next year he has closing speed and can go go sub 13. He can match Mottram in all aspects.
I do think that Ritz will prove to be his best at 10km but whether he can run 26x and really compete with the top guys remains to be seen.
