Those of you without much experience automatically assume, many times incorectly, that a solo effort is slower. There are many individuals who perform better without the stress of a race and a distraction of winning first. This has no bearing at all toward the young lady, Kim Smith. I do not know her nor anything about her. I am just pointing out that the early season 'solo' or 'without speed work' labels used to predict great future performances simply is meaningless in most cases. This shows the importance of an aerobic base, and the ability of some to concentrate without distractions of other athletes in the mix. Is someone running a solo effort capable of better? Some. Will they all improve? No way, in fact, it is usually less than 50% for an NCAA level athlete.
