I'm not at all taking away anything from Dorian Ulrey's fantastic run, nor am I implying that German could have run a 3:35 by default. But did anyone else, upon seeing the results, think that German's future event might be the 1500?
Congradulations to Ulrey. He went, he raced, he nailed it.
Don't want to suddenly turn this to a German thread, as Ulrey deserves his props. But, I've been saying all along that German's future is in the 1500. At least, for right now; Smith is a smart guy who (luckily) doesn't believe the majority of LRC visitors when they believe German should be currently focusing on the 5.

Plenty of time for German to sort out which event he's fastest at, but he was not even the fastest collegiate in either event this year, nor will he be the fastest returner:
1500 METERS
3:35.23 Dorian Ulrey 7/10
3:36.92 ***Matthew Centrowitz (Or) Payton Jordan 05/02
3:37.25 -Lee Emanuel (NM-GB) Payton Jordan 05/02
3:37.57 -Garrett Heath (Stan) Payton Jordan 05/02
3:37.64 *Jack Bolas (Wi) Payton Jordan 05/02
3:37.81 *Craig Miller (Wi) Payton Jordan 05/02
3:39.00 ***German Fernandez (OkSt) NCAA 06/13
5000 METERS
13:18.12i -Galen Rupp (Or) Tyson Inv 02/13
13:19.79i **Sam Chelanga (Lib-Ken) Tyson Inv 02/13
13:25.46 ***German Fernandez (OkSt) USATF 06/26
German is great and I hope he lights it up again next year, but it is conceivable that he won't be able to win the 1500 at NCAA's next year with a healthy Centrowitz and Ulrey in it, as well as Wheating if he runs it. That is great though for fans of US distance running. That a guy as great as German could conceivably lose to 3 other young american distance runners at 1500.
His chances to win are probably better in the 5K unless Chelanga does that and peaks right. I think McNeil will be up for a sub 13:20 next year and he has very good closing speed.
Does Dorian Ulrey have a girlfriend? Does he want one? Just asking.

unofficial 3:35!!!!
Anyone remember that interview after Rupp threw down on him indoors on the DMR? He was crushed, completely down.
I think he redeemed himself in a huge way at the US championships and now this.

He does. Just saying.
Actually, Abdi Bile ran 3:31 (World Champion, too) as a collegiate and Bernard Lagat ran 3:30.
Out of the collegiate season like Ulrey.
So not even close to a collegiate record.

Well maybe he wants another one?

No he doesn't. He has a boyfriend named Andy Schon. Get over it, ladies!
Andy Schon isn't gay. I'm thinking you meant Mike Stout... the greatest c********* the Midwest region has ever known.

Wowsa, I didn't remember Lagat doing that, was that after his senior year? I think it's a little different if you do it the summer after your senior year vs. the summer between one college year and the next, especially if you haven't signed a shoe contract, I mean Ulrey is taking summer classes online right now.
Bye the way, has Rupp signed with Nike or what?
If he makes the finals he will have reached whole new level. This is good news!
Not a collegiate record. Lagat ran 3:30 in 1999, and Cheriyuot ran 3:33 in 1986.

Right, but is it an American-born collegiate record by someone whose name starts with a D?
I think so. COLLEGIATE RECORD!!

Oh yeah...huge c*********. NTTAWWT.
Someone or some body ought to re do all the Collegiate Record top to bottom.
Seems like a ton of disparity when folks talk about them.
Maree always had it I thought at 1500, yet when you look back, surely Ryun who ran much faster at age 20 was in college and not leaving anytime soon etc.
Here is what I do not get:
Jim Ryun ran this as a 20 year old college soph in July, earlier than Ulrey just did?
1,500 meters 3:33.1 July 8, 1967 Los Angeles, CA
How is it possible he would not be the CR HOlder and certainly then Ulrey could not be, right?
Speaking in code now, I see. Well, here's a riddle for you: What has blonde hair, is incredibly cocky, and runs slow as shit? Figure it out and let me know. Douche bag.
Wooooooooooooooooo he took 12th place let's have a party.
too bad german fernandez would've gone 3:33

A 4.5 second PR at that level, especially given the last minute notice of entry and 11 hour flight over AND feeling cruddy early into a race that goes out in :53 IS a great reason for his camp to party!
