Son, do your research. Henry Rono has the NCAA record at 27:22 from his amazing '78 season. Chelenga DID dip under Rupps' PR however. Can't wait to see Galen destroy him at NCs.

I just love ignorant know-it-alls.

Rupp, not Rono, held the 10000 college record.
Collegiate Records—Men
Records as ratified by the T&FN Records Committee include only those made by NCAA athletes, no NAIA or JUCO performances.
T&FN Records Committee? A bunch of ancient drunks in Mountain View decide what is a 'collegiate record'?
That's f***ing funny!

What does "NA" mean after most of their names?
"NA" or non-applicable refers to their collegiate grade level.
ho hum. he's a F-rated african runner who looks great over here with weak us college kids.

You present an interesting point. Henry Rono was the best east african in the World 30 years ago and he was running the same times as Chelenga. Now that type of east african is considered ho hum. It is amazing how much more difficult it is for todays runners than it was 30 years ago. Further evidence that Shorter and Rodgers and Salazar and Virgin would NOT have been competitive on a World Level if they had the same level of competition as todays athletes,
One can also compare the late \'70s to the late \'40s.

Considering the ease with which Rupp has been dispatching Chelanga all year, this is a great indicator that Rupp is ready to run fast!

why don't you guys want to congratulate chelanga for that achievement? If it were Rupp you would surely have sang praises and given him a pat on the back.Chelanga though is kenyan is showing kids in amarica that you can train and live in america and even go to university in amarica and still be one of the best disatnace runners in the world. He is showing that the athletic's system in USA colleges works.

....how many times have they raced?
Rupp is a far superior racer, but i really don't think Rupp is much faster in a balls out race. When Rupp ran his 5k record Chelanga was right on his heels.
How old is Chelanga? His birthday was in February...isn't he 25 now?

Well, a couple things. Not knocking Sam because I know he is a really nice guy and races very hard. On top of that he shows very good progression and already has a great resume.
But regarding your statement, in that 5K Sam was able to stick on them UNTIL they kicked. In which case Galen put almost 2 seconds on him over the last 200 meteres. That race actually got faster each 1K and it seemed pretty clear that Galen was comfortable with it the entire way. Had that race been moving faster Sam probably would have been a bit further back as he did lose contact every so slightly a couple times, while Galen appeared to be holding back the entire time until the kick.
Also. Last night had a bunch of guys running at 27:30 pace from the start and Sam ran 27:28. Two years ago, before Galen made some obvious jumps in fitness Galen ran 27:33 in a race that was at 27:40-27:45 pace at halfway.
After watching Galen indoors it was pretty clear that his fitness has moved to another level. He closed out a triple by completely shutting it down the last 1200 in the 3K and cruising home in 7:48.
Additionally, Sam has a history of being at his best midseason. Not saying he peaks too early, but he may not actually improve significantly by the end of season. Galens best times will come mid summer this year.

That means he's really 26 - 27 at least.

I believe he is going to become an American sometime in the next year.

Those cheatin' Africans all lie about their ages to beat our superior kids, then do drugs to beat our superior men and women.

Well if it is in fact considered a CR then I take back my previous statement.
I still feel that if you mention someones record as old that there is a new record and the old one was the previous. Rupps record was old the day after he set it.
Son, I think you owe the OP a little more than a reluctant retraction. Apparently, not only were you wrong about the CR, but you were condescending in tone.
Now apologize to everyone for being a typical letsrun douche.

No, Collis ran back on Sam over the last 500m. Sam made a break with about 1200m to go and stretched the lead until Collis ran a brilliant last 500m to nearly pull even with 120m to go. Sam easily outdistanced him in the last 100m. Collis did not help pull Sam or the pace in the last 1600m+. And yes, I was there. Sam's run was very impressive as was Collis' run. The Aussie group had a great meet overall, actually.
