Sometimes a minor stress fracture is hard to detect. It won't show up on xrays; You need a bone scan or MRI and even then sometimes it's hard to find.
It could be that he's got mostly a case of shinsplints and trying to tough it out. Could also be that they're looking for an excuse to bypass NCAA outdoors to compete in WC/World Juniors. It does not make sense to me to be running in WXC if there is a true diagnosis of a stress fracture.
I have no doubt that if German had run in USATF Indoors, he'd be going to Worlds (and Webb wouldn't), and in my mind that's what they should have done.
Shinsplints aren't a terribly common affliction among 3:55 milers. Also, the article does specify that it IS in his foot.
I think it's really a shame. I was very excited for him to race at worlds. Unfortunately the pressure on him to race is unbelievable. I can definitely see him racing, and being worse off for it. No way he'll do outdoors. The last thing OSU needs to do is get him injured AGAIN by trying to push him into racing shape after THIS injury. I'm sure getting injured at cross nationals contributed to the decision to "push the envelope" with his training during the time leading up to World Cross and the indoor season. Maybe German should just "redshirt" indoors every year, peaking only for NCAA cross nationals and for outdoor. If this phenom (who appears to be much like Ritz: unbelievably talented but VERY injury prone--he had many injury problems in high school, if I recall correctly) tries to race year-round, bad things are bound to happen.
