Skeletal muscle mitochondria will increase both in size and number with endurance training. An increase of 100% is not uncommon after only 5 to 10 days of training (along with a corresponding increases in VO2Max). However, with training beyond that not nearly as large of a jump is seen. This seems to suggest that mitochondria are not the limiting factor, but instead part of a much larger picture, when related to endurance.
