the DMRs always seem to come down to best miler
Bumbalough has two indoor + XC seasons left. He has one outdoor season left.
texas is a good team for the dmr but i agree it comes down to the mile leg.
the best racer, not just pure time. that is why i say they dont win. they lose their gutsy last leg.
in the 5k i think chelanga will take it out too hard and get eaten up late.
in the 3k i like bumbalough or perry. 2nd and 3rd last year and both great races at xc nats. aslo both sub 4 mile and sub 150 800. 3k always won by someone with sick speed
in the mile i like acosta or heath. both are dying for a title, heath is dying faster.
in tho 800 i like hernandez over wheating for the sheer fact that tall runners dont turn 200m corners as well as their shorter counterparts. just a theory based on my personal indoor races.
i run at BYU and know they have high hopes for the dmr this year.
top 5 is in their realm of possibility.
i like heath in the mile too. he is great. a slew of races at the top, deserves a win
it is really funny to hear picks this early.
who knows who will run what?
who will get injured?
who will come out of the woodworks?
too early to tell. no one will accurately predict top 5
in any event, guaranteed!
BIG EAST 3k will be a great race this year
Several of these guys could factor into the NCAA scene as well.
Without question
Smyth (ND)7:55
Bumb (GT) 7:53
also...
McCarthy(PC) 8:03 in '08 with stock rising and solid perf. at '08 NCAA X-C
Heath (SU) 4:01 miler, 8:38 steeple (6th at '08 NCAA Outdoor)
You gotta put Dorian Ulrey in the mix for the mile. I dont know what his pr is or how he did last year indoors but he is the top returner from the 1500 last year. And although he transferred to Arkansas, he still has the same coach he had at UNI.
Thoughts:
To the posters who said Rupp has not run indoors for OU - just look at 2007 and 2006. In '07 he was runner-up to Solinsky. I'm assuming he'll run this season and double - he could win the 5K and maybe the 3K. I think Songock is out of eligibility. Chelanga will give him hell though if he runs like he's been running. Those 2 might beat each other up in the 5K and leave the door open for Bumbalough to take the 3K title.
Mile is open with Manzano gone. Is Morse healthy? Acosta's been wounded. Does Heath have eligibility for this season? I asume Bumbi will go DMR and 3K like last year. Would Wheating jump into this one?
What will Fernandez (if healthy), Puskedra, Derrick run indoors? Could be fun to see how they mix it up with the old guard.
DMRs - Oregon has Wheating to run any leg, Centro was anchor last year, Acosta if healthy...
Stanford has Hakon, Heath (if eligible).
G-Town has Boylan-Pett to replace Debole as lead-off, and if Bumbi can muster another 3:56 anchor - beware!
how many guys under 4 this year?
last year there were 11, and another 14 under 401. (25 under 401)
in 07 there were only 4 under 4 and 10 more under 401. (14 inder 401)
up to 16 of these guys return this year. ( at least 16 of them weren't seniors)
i got my money on it will be slower still. even though 16 were sub 401 that return. i am going to say 7 go sub 4 this year.
thats my pick
Arkansas has to be mentioned in the top 3 for the DMR with both McClarys and Ulrey. What other team has 2 milers that good?
Nick Long From Georgia has been beating Georgia's top 800 guy from last year, so I think Nick long will win the ship for 800.
uhh...your kidding right? well lets see...Oregon has four or five to name one off the top of my head
uh huh wrote:

Ehh maybe. One of the McClarys ran 3:36 last year and Ulrey is top returner for the 1500. Oregon is right there with Wheating and Acosta, but I'm not sure if there are 2 or 3 other Oregon guys that good. Centro, McNamara aren't quite there
agreed with arkansas being good. i still think they are overrated.
oregon is good. a great runner in every event. 2 in some events. still think they will not win
neither school win win the dmr.
someone with balls win win it....
by balls i mean when it comes down to the last leg someone who is strong enough to go for it i fell like both schools have guys who can put them self in it but not ran away with it.
yeah i think you are right on that one.
i dont like either to win it
out to get em wrote:in tho 800 i like hernandez over wheating for the sheer fact that tall runners dont turn 200m corners as well as their shorter counterparts. just a theory based on my personal indoor races.
Remember those Olympic Trials thingummies back in the summer?
Oregon will win the DMR if Wheating anchors. He is just too good for anyone in the NCAA right now from 800-mile. Georgetown will be in it as will a few others. Texas will be battling for 3rd or 4th at best.
Question:
Say all of the recent big names, the guys who went into college well-known and have continued to be well-known once there, line up for a 3k (should fall between 1500 and 5k specialists). How does it play out?
Bumbi, Acosta, Mead, Jager, Centro, Forys, Fernandez, Derrick, Puskedra
Let's hear some predictions on this one, since we have no idea who will even run what event come indoor nats.
I say:
Fernandez 7:49
Bumbi 7:49.xx
Puskedra 7:53
Derrick
Jager
Mead
Acosta (theories on why he kind of sucks at anything longer than the mile?)
Centro
Forys
Bumbi in 7:48
Puskedra in 7:49
Fernandez 7:49.xx
Derrick 7:50
Acosta 7:53
Jager 7:54
Centro 7:54.xx
Mead 7:56
Forys 7:57
