Lydiard does not require a 6 month aerobic phase. You just do the aerobic phase as long as you can. 2 months will do. And if you do a longer aerobic phase, you can still race quite well. In fact, Lydiard advocated time trials during the aerobic phase. Daniels seems slow because he wants you to always run relaxed and with good form, saving the straining for races. The tables do stretch out a little too much for sub-elites (threshold for sub-elites is closer to 15k, for elites half marathon pace is better). Both work.
I am pushing 40. I used to think that I had to go for it on my workouts in order to make big improvements. After some frustrating injuries, I started to think more about the big picture and less about trying to torture myself with super hard speed work outs. The result is that I have been able to run more miles with fewer injuries and continue to improve.
