I first want to say that the Rombus post is hilarious. Posts like that make me laugh out loud at work.
But to respond to the OP, I have 3 friends who started running in the past year or 2. They are all young 24-27 and all athletic.
1. is 27, plays on 3 club soccer teams and is generally pretty fit. He trained for the HALF-marathon for 4 months and ran a 1:45. I have no idea how much mileage he did, but I'm guessing around 40-50 mpw. he is also 5'7, and 195. I wouldn't say he's fat though. I don't really know where he puts the weight unless he's a lot more jacked than I think he is.
2. is 26, doesn't really play any sports but is on the company soccer team. He has been running for the past 10 months. maybe 4-5 times a week (5 -8 miles with a longrun of 12 or longer) and plays soccer once a week. He ran a marathon last week for 4:14. I'm sure he could have run faster though as he said he had to stop every mile for the last 7 or 8 miles because he was cramping up everywhere.
3. is 25. Wrestled in HS, then got fat. real fat apparently and then lost maybe 60 lbs in the past year. He is not super skinny now or anything, he probably has 30-40 lbs on me (I'm 130). He doesn't have any marathon times yet, but I've run with him before I would guess that 3:15 is within his range. I suppose wrestling gives him a big aerobic advantage as those guys run all the time.
Wrestling gives you a great mental edge. Wrestling gives you a high pain threshold. Wrestling conditions you to welcome pain.

I tried a couple 50k's but my times weren't very good as I spent too long at the buffet tables they had set up along the course.
