Yes, "net" time is almost always used to give prize money, but Korir's net time is still 2:13 because he had a later start. His net time wasn't 2:18. So, if he go by the rules most organizations and races go by - he finishes 4th. I agree it's not fair for the other runners to be pushed back, but it's similar to track when a runner places out of a slow heat.
This isn't gymnastics, the guy ran the 4th fastest time, so he's 4th.

"off".
"off of" is not a proper term in the English language (a barbarism).
I knew it was wrong and I did it anyway! So what?
they should have the elites start at the same time but start at a diffrent start so they run a slightly diffrent first mile before joining the mass route. they could even have a diffrent start again for the elite women. i beleive they do this at london.

It drives me nuts that someone has already mentioned a lawsuit. If anything, Laruet and Mutai have a stronger legal case than Korir. The 1st 5 males and 5 females across the finish line are the one's Chicago are supposed to pay. No race uses chip times to pay people.
Hey dumbass, the proposed lawsuit wouldn't be W. Korir vs. Lauret or W. Korir vs. Mutai... It would be W. Korir vs. Chicago Marathon.
Whether or not, in your simple mind, Mutai or Lauret have "stronger" cases than Korir does not matter. Wesley has a legal claim to 5th place finisher money, assuming he went through the proper steps to try to register himself as "elite" prior to the race.
You are stupid. This website is stupid. It is filled nearly entirely with stupid people, with a few geniuses sprinkled throughout.
You seem to have anger issues that I hope you are working through
I started a couple threads about this before the race and no one seemed to think it was a big deal. what makes things worse is Wesley had to pay 110 bucks and when he paid he was paying to start with everyone else. THis change was announced a few weeks before the race after he paid.
No, he's right. This site is run by and tends to attract low-brow mouth-breathers.
I think this is clearly an issue that Chicagos elitist mentality got them into this whole mess. They are looking at a guy like Wesley not as a 4th place finisher in potential, but a C rate Kenyan that doesnt have a chance of running under 2:10.
They should do the political thing here and give him the money, then go back to the normal start next year. three years in a row there has been controvesy at this race and they are slipping further from London and NYC as the best race in the world. I dont even think they can be mentioned in the same sentence right now.
Do the rght thing. Give him and the other two their money and sow your losses.
Wasn't that a Seinfeld Episode?
Is Wesley Korir an American citizen? Can someone confirm either way.

PS.As for the guy who says it's a stupid website, please don't come back. Thank you.
He is Kenyan. Not American. Lives in Louisville, but is not a citizen. its corrected on the website.
GET THIS ALL THE SPLITS WERE BASED ON THE ELITES WHO STARTED 4MIN AHEAD. SO THE MASSES ALL HAD TO DO SOME FUNKY MATH TO GET AN ACCURATE SPLIT OR USE UR OWN WATCH.
NOW USING YOUR OWN WATCH IS FINE FOR THE FOLKS RUNNING FAST BUT I CAN BARELY RUN AND THINK. SO I WAS A BIT PISSED WHEN I SAW MY SPLITS WERE NOT GOING TO BE RELIED ON BY THE FOLKS I PAID GOOD MONEY TO PROVIDE $80!
Yeah, I agree with rojo that it would not be fair to the 4th and 5th place guys to put korir in 4th place because they were in different races. theoretically, if korir had actually been in the race with them, they might have adjusted their race strategy mid-way to ensure that they could secure some prize money. nobody told them they should be racing against the clock. they were there racing the guys around them, and korir was not one of those guys they needed to consider.
I agree with wesley korir rules and pretty sure I knwo who you be haha...he deserves the prize money so come up with it and give it to him....plain sick wesley..hell of a race. I am sure next time you have your place up front....indeed
If Chicago doesn't pay Korir, they are sliding down the slope of becoming a second tier event. Pay the dude, not only that, play it up, showcase it, let every freaking runner out there know, if you come to Chicago and do well, you'll be rewarded. Hell, they could probably find a sponsor for the "your name here" Wesle Korir 4th palce payday check.
Is everyone sure that he paid for his entry? He's run 29:06 and 65 and change. Even Chicago, with all it's prestige and history, should give him a free bib number.
I think you'll find that there is the opinion (and I think a USATF rule) that chip times should not determine any winners - it's gun time. This was debated on a thread after the starting mats failed at the Boilermaker this year. So here we have a situation where the race director was unwilling to let Wesley into the elite corral (if the request was indeed made, as posted here), so he gave everyone else in that corral a 5 minute gun time head start on Wesley. It'll be interesting if the race director does the right thing ethically, or is even allowed to do so if the rules state otherwise.

You guys are nuts. Even though he was denied the opportunity to start with the first wave, Korir still outran all but three of them. Just repeating the order in which they crossed the line and ignoring that they did not start together is illogical.
If the guys who finished behind him want to whine, then they could've started with the mass start, same as Korir. Nobody made them line up in the elite wave. Somebody made Korir line up in the other wave, and he did his talking with his feet.
