So, in theory, Futsum should place 4th or higher at FL Nationals. ;)

okay guyss just to let you know futsum and his brother are both good friends of mine and they are awesome!!! and so what if they look like they are 20. people get told they look older then what they really are ALL the time! so i dont see where oyur point is
Futsum got 2nd in 15:25 to senior Drew Shields of Fishers (15:20).
In the first 500 meters, he ran to the left, bent down, and tied his shoes.
Yep he stopped because somebody stepped on the back of his shoe and pulled it part of the way off. He pulled up, untied it, put it on, retied it, and was in dead last. He came back to get 2nd so I guess it woulda been a real duel to the finish line if he hadn't done that. It was crazy to watch because we all kind of just freaked out. Hopefully he goes on to do well at FLN.
The national championship field was composed of 33 seniors, 6 juniors, no sophmores and a freshman. That freshman was Futsam. He finished 7th. He was the only non-senior in the top 10.

Are we looking at our first 3-peat winner in National HS X-C championships? The first repeat was also from East Africa, Mohammed Abdirizak. These successes of african transplants (such as Meb and Abdi being our # 1 & # 2 all time fastest 10k runners, and KK being our fastest marathoner, and Lagat being our only world champion miler or 5k'r in recent memory, etc, etc) are purely coincidental in case anyone was wondering, and have nothing to do with some areas of the globe producing more talented runners than other parts.
it will be interesting in track season if he will break eric hult's long standing freshman 2 mile record of 9:04.
The kid did quite well at FLN, but you have to factor in runners who competed in NXN only and no FLN.
Great performance nonetheless.
Best freshman ever? He's got to be up there.
how old is he? whens his birthday?
Wait till indoor and more importantly outdoor before you give him that title. For xc though he's definitely a contender for it.
(At the 2008 state meet)...he bent down and tied his shoe in the first 500m and still was out in front by the mile marker.
why is this on the front page?
I really want to see a race between Zeinasellassie and Verzbicas. Who do you thik would win 5k? 3200? 1600?
I think it would be close in the 5k, Verzbicas would easily take 3200, and Verzbicas would probably win the1600, but not for sure.
Futsum is a great runner, but he couldn't touch 14:18 5k INDOORS...
amazing watching him run. I run for brebeuf and at the 2009 regional he was up 20 seconds before the 1 mile post.
Where is he now?
He is older than 15. His brother was a senior this year and he was at least 40 secs. faster than him in races, but since they moved here their age doesn't apply to their grade. His brother is at least 20. And, last year might have been Futsum's last year because he might be over the age limit to do IHSAA.
