Okay- 15s/mile slower than 10k pace. That makes sense.But, I still disagree with this:

I think there may be times when that is not only reasonable, but is in fact, exactly what needs to be done. For example, if the tempo run is a bit longer (an hour in the low-6 range is a lot harder than your standard 20 minute tempo run), or if tempos are being done "malmo-style" (4-5 times/week), or if a runner is aerobically weak, or if the terrain is different, or it's a second hard day in a row . . . etc.
Maybe I've got a bit more broad of an idea of what a tempo run is than do some people, but I feel that a tempo run can vary from what you're describing pretty much all the way up to a longer MP run. It all depends on the goal of the workout.
