Fascinating. Thanks for all he work!
Who knew Belarus would rank that high. If we did this for throws alone, they've gotta be #1 (unless Poland edges)...

You made an error when you added 42 points to USAs score and called it the russian's score. So you had the Russian's at 220 instead of 179, but the USA was correct at 188. Good job though.
wow nice work... very interesting
So I did

o.O :
there are very few times that i am impressed by someone on letsrun, but you definitely have. nice work! i was honestly surprised to see someone took the time to see this through and not just talk about it.
Ha, the question was asked why not do it.
All the numbers and keeping track of the numerous additions and totals screwed up the numbers though. Probably should have wrote up a program in C++ so that future instances of this would be easier.
If we did do team medals at track and field world and/or Olympic championships I think it would be better to do a women's team medals and seperate men's team medals like they would do at any team scored track and field event. Does anyone care to tabulate mens and womens teams for the last Olympics using top 8 individual scoring? I'm very curious how things would have panned out.
Zombie thread alert.
On the other hand this is interesting. I think only the truly athletic sports should be counted. Synchronized diving and Rhythmic gymnastics, etc, should be excluded (also because they are judged).
Also, what should the point system be? Should multiple place winners from the same country score in the same event, or just the highest placer?
8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
or
10-8-6-4-3-2-1
or
8-6-4-2-1
or
5-4-3-1

I kinda like the 10-8-6-4-3-2-1 as it gives more weight to medalist while still giving points to lower placers. Multiple place winners in the same event and from the same country should be scored just as multiple college athletes from the same school can score in the same event
True Team Scoring based on points awarded for effort (Scoring tables) rather than place should also be considered. If every country is allowed the same number of entries, then it becomes more fair from the start. Then you could score every finisher and legal attempt so that everybody counts. Some events are going to be stronger than others for different countries but could still average out.

Why should anyone care about your arbitrary qualifications?

It doesn't matter. This scoring system will be a win for the USA, with maybe a possible upset from Russia. If you're actually handing out medals for this, there might be a good race for third, but otherwise, 90% of the athletes won't care because they'll have no effect on the total.
But hey, it seems like an easy way for all of our athletes to win another gold without doing anything. Go USA!!!
