Fam and Billy Nelson are Steeplechase gods

I corrected myself. We did get two distance medals in 2004 in the marathon. So we have gotton 3 Olympic distance medals since 1984.
Meb, Deena, Flanagan, Jennings.
DIEMER steeplechase
Well, that was 1984, which also had Joanie in the marathon.
I choose to agree with you.
I don't know ... did he make a statement after the finals suggesting doping or are we all just assuming from his previous interviews?

Yeah! crazy to think that someone would be doping--just look at the Tour this year!! and the use of of CERA a new blood doping agent better than any other.
FAM is straight up...although I think his talents lay in the 5k and 10k as we've seen. Not to say he would win but he has more options of moving up in the results.

Fam is the only US distance to get to the finals so far. I guess you could say Rupp's performance was comparable to being in the finals as well.

Yeah, good for Fam. Made the finals, gave it his best shot. Until you've been there, I'd back off a little.
i agree. it seems like just 2 years ago everyone loved fam and was on his bandwagon. now they are tired of him.
fickle group these letsrunners.

I can't believe you douche bags are on here calling Fam out for his efforts. Make the olympic team and then say what you want. maybe someday you will all break 4:20 for the mile.
Touche. Talk is cheap. Fam doesn't have time to respond; he's busy over in China. What's on your schedule for today?
fam did a lot better in the beijing olympics than
bernard lagat
lopez lamong
deena kastor
paula radcliffe
tyson gay
alan webb
adam goucher
i could go on.
I have to give it to him, he kept with his initial strategy he had been using since the prelims in the trials...go to the front and hammer. It would have been difficult for him to all a sudden change his strategy and hang back in the pack. Very pre like
with people bitching that Rupp didn't stick his nose into it and just followed, why then bash Fam for trying?
What was it that he said or did that is getting old? (serious question.)
When you know you are outclassed, sometimes the best thing you can do is take to the front of a race. It's a bit odd to most to be getting "experience" in an olympic final, but in essence that is what happened. He can draw from this in the future, as he's now felt what it's like to be leading an olympic race. Without being in shape to run a sub 13' 5K, nobody in their right mind would expect to win an international class steeple.
When you're 5+ seconds per km off the cream of the crop you need to be working on your aerobic development more, or move up to the marathon and hope tactics and weather plays to your favor.
God, this place is full of whiny lounge chair quarterbacks, isn't it? Letsrun continues to be just a place for people to complain about one strategy, or complain about the opposite strategy.
"I'm disappointed in (blank). If I were in the race, I'd definitely win gold, because I'd do it correctly. I should be (blank)'s coach."
What a sad life some of us must lead.
Personally, I was just glad someone took a shot. Fam knew he might be outclassed, but he took a shot at pressing the pace and it didn't pay off in a medal. It made me very proud in the effort and attitude, regardless of the outcome.
The FAM is getting exactly what he wanted out of the Olympic experience...maximu exposure and publicity for mediocre results.
The below guys never talked shit and produced better results....lesson learned!
1984 - Brian Diemer 3rd in 1984 - 8:14 after two rounds
1992 - Brian Diemer 7th in 1992 - 8:19 after two rounds
1996 - Mark Croghan 5th in 1996 - 8:17 after two rounds
So, he runs a PR race, makes the final, stays in the lead pack for more than half the race, makes a bid to go for a medal .... and its somehow is an 'act that's getting old'. Jesus. Exactly what did YOU do today that makes this seem lame to you?
I believe that after not making the final in his last Olympic try, Fam realized he needed to push his limits in his qualifier to get through it. While watching the final this morning, I thought it was brave of him to get up into the mix and try to race, rather than trudging along at the back of the field in hopes of running a decent time. As my Irish friends say, "It's better to go out hard and die like a man, than to run like a Nancy-boy." (I'm not exactly sure what that means, but they really say that.)
Fam, if you make it this far down the thread, nice going!
