Do to some major life changes am only going to be able to run about 60-70 miles per week. I have the confidence that I can run sub 13:40 and have been told that I am a 13:30 5k'er that will "never reach his potential..."
So. I'm out to do it. I won't have the time for doubles. So everything will be on singles. For the past two years I've run 90-100 miles per week and have run PR's of 8:34//14:43//30:14//1:07.42.
I'm 23 years old.
Thoughts?
23 years old and you all ready do not have time to do the kind of training that the rest of us have to do. What are you the president or something? 14:43 and sub 13:40 are worlds apart. If you really wanted to make that kind of a leap you wouldn't be putting any restrictions on yourself. The fact that it took 90-100 miles a week to run over a minute slower than your goal should be a red flag. I do not believe you are as talented as you think you are. There is nothing wrong with that. Just accept the fact that your going to have to do the doubles, the long days, short days, weights, and drills it takes to take over a minute off your pr. Your pr is a lot faster then mine and I could not in my wildest dreams run sub 13:40 so you don't have to listen to a word I say. I do however work full time and still put in doubles. It's not like this sport takes 6 hours a day. Suck it up and train like a man or don't and enjoy your free time like the rest of the college age wimps.
Thanks for the input.
90-100 mpw were helping me to improve, but
i was also constantly injured. and for two years
my running was THE priority. and i lost relationships
i lost friends, i lost jobs, i lose a lot.
i have nothing more to prove in the sport;
13:40 won't make me olympian, it won't get
me a shoe contract. but this fire burns that
says, "if you can run 13:30, why not?"
i know there are several lower-medium mileage guys
that are very talented that run very fast.
i'm not that talented.
but atleast i can try, right?
1. What kind of speed do you have ie; 400m/800m/1500m?
2. Did you run in college?

This was actually my next question. If you have fast as hell leg speed I could see it happening. If you are a 50 second quarter guy then you might not need the strength that most guys need.
53 sec
1:56
3:54
NO SPEED...:)
The goal though, is to focus a little more (READ: not focus, but pay more attention to) on the smaller things; core, strength, drills, proper warming up and cooling down.

Leg speed doesn´t have anything to do with how fast you can run a 5000m. Simple physiology.
Good luck, but I would say there aint no way your going to break 14:00
Prove me wrong
Problem is simply this...even at 23, quality beats up your body. If you don't have the time to train properly, then you won't have the time to take care of your body. You won't find the time for massage, chiropractic, stretching, and the attention to all the details you need.
If you can't find the time for even a few doubles a week, then how are you going to find the time to travel, or do the small things you mention? Will you find the time to train with others or will it all be on your own? If on your own, what is your plan to get in the quality you will need?
Don't want to sound harsh, but it doesn't seem like you are setting yourself up for success.

Aaron Ramirez? Seems like it was a BUMP in mileage after he transferred to UA that put him on the map. Looking for a lowish mileage, quality example? Look at Ramirez' counterpart in Matt Giusto. Of course, Giusto had raw footspeed. Can't remember what he ran for the mile, but I'm pretty sure he was capable of 3:55.
dude, if you could only run a 14:40ish 5k on 100 mile weeks for 2 years, there is absolutely no way you can run a sub 13:40 on even less miles. if you are truely very talented, youd run a 14:40 on 40-50 miles a week, which some of my friends have done. you think you can drop 20 seconds per mile? seriously, I dont know what world you are living in but it wont happen. what is your mile and 800 pr? this has to be a troll or someone as delusional as brandon moen.
Interesting because the 3:54 is equal to about a 14:30 5k so you actually have better speed than strength. Set a realistic goal...even 14:00 is not realistic at this point. At this point even 14:00 is out of reach, 14:20 would be a very nice improvement and you could do it off of 70 per week if you structure it properly.
Juice ran 353 @ mizuno kezar stadium meet back in 91 or 92. He consistenly ran 90-110 per week except when peaking and racing.
I don't think he ran a consistent 90-110 earlier in his career, but he didn't need to. Very few guys can run 3:53 off of ANY kind of training.
I suppose my quest is now to run 13:35 on 70 mpw AND to prove the message boarders wrong!
totally kidding about proving people wrong.
but it would be a huge plus.
I'm in your corner, Mr. Optional. Go for it!
Start with sub 14:20
There is NO indication 13:35 is within your capabilities. Your going to have to go thru way faster than your 3K pr, then you have another 2K. If you ran 8:34 at 3K (your PR) your going to have to run 5:00 for next 2K!

I hate to say this but those times are not that impressive. You sound like the kind of guy that would benefit from doing the opposite of what your planning on doing. I would think you need to get up to your goal of 70 mpw in singles and then start adding doubles a few days a week until your doing 13 runs a week at about 90-110. It is going to take some serious strength to go from a 14:40 guy to a 13:30 guy. If I were in your shoes I would hook up with a serious group of guys like the Hansons because your not going to be able to train yourself into that kind of shape alone. I think a sub 29 10k would be a better goal.
Agree, start with sub 14:20 and go from there. I think a lofty, but semi-reasonable goal would be sub 14:00. I was never blazing fast so anyone in the 14's is pretty good to me, but when someone says something starting with the number 13, I'm very impressed. You gotta really be great to run sub 14, IMO. (Then again, you don't have to impress anyone but yourself, but you get the idea.)
Shoot for sub 14:20, then sub-14:10, then try for sub 14. I think 13:35 is a pretty high goal, but what the heck, go for it. Take it a step at a time.
* Henry Rono -- from what I head -- ran no more than 80 miles per week. Then again, he was a gifted Kenyan. I never heard of him doing 100, and he ran 13:06, 27:22, 8:05, etc. Freak of nature who is not a good comparison.

Thoughts? Here are my "thoughts" If you are having to come on letsrun to ask about running 13:35 off of 70 mpw you will never make it....If you have only run 1440 off of 90-100 miles a week, you will never break 1400. Do you understand what a big jump it is from 1440 to 1340? but yet you are confident you can just cut off a minute on 30 less mpw? Everyone was a sub 15 min 5k guy in college. Work on breaking 1430 before you even start thinking about go sub 1410.
Can we talk about how crazy hard this Olympic marathon course is?
