my friend is 5'10, 200 pounds and he has broken five several times. although he is a senior in high school, not 43
I'm 50 , and ran a 5:20 last year , before straining a calf muscle. I'm 5'11 and weighed 167 at the time.
To make it easier ( shaving 5 seconds off per lap ) , I know my weight should be in the 153 to 155 range. Sticking with whole foods and watching overall caloric intake , while upping mileage and quality speed work , seems to take care of the weight.
Finding training partners with a good sense of humor and a drive to excel is also helpful. Keep it fun , and get enough rest.
My goals are to: go sub 5 as a 50 year old ; go sub 60 for 400 at 51 ; and break 2:10 for 800 at 52. Those are progressively more difficult , but do-able...muscle and tendons willing ! :)

What kind of mileage and workouts were you doing to go sub 5?
I was "retired" from running for about 15 years. I came back and followed the Daniels Running Formula and got within 8%+/- of my 1500M PR.
I followed it to the letter. PR at age 21 for 1500M was 3:57 at age 41 ran 4:24.
I was nothing great and there are a lot of masters way faster then me but I trained 100% alone in a rural area and was very happy with my comeback and weight loss etc.
Runnin It & Purple Man -- Thanks for the perspective and input -- your comebacks and how you did are both matter-of-fact and inspirational.
