Considering he went through the 10K in London just a smidge slower than this, I'd say yeah - it was shitty. If I did a 10K race and ran is <60sec off what my 10K split is in a marathon I'd consider it poor and I can't hold a candle to Hall.

I was shocked to hear that Ryan Hall called his performance "a good start". I know that he isn't a 10k runner, but for a runner of his caliber a 30:07 should be horrible.
so much stupidity from you. Hall is gearing up for an August in China, what arguably will be the greatest moment of his life (to date). Torres, who lives and breaths between 5 and 10k runs 8 seconds faster and you don't bat an eye at his "horrible" performance.
foolio are you.
Harroufi Ridouane, the winner of today's race, had a PR this April in the Hamburg Marathon of 2:12:36. With Hall running 2:06:17 in London, it's hard to believe Hall got beat by 1:35 in a race against Ridouane who ran 6:20 slower than Hall in his last Marathon in a PR effort. Hall trains at altitude, it was a perfect day for racing weatherwise -- don't know what happened. I would have thought Hall was at least 1 min better than this. He never contended -- was well back at mile 1.
We were glad to see him here nevertheless, and hope his effort was no reflection of his fitness for Beijing. We won't know as this was his last race until the Olympics. Who would have believed it -- 5th at London and 14th at BolderBoulder.
god, people are stupid.
This is what happens when people try to boil the entire sport down to times, to the exclusion of so many other considerations. It is simplistic, at best.

maybe jesus isn't happy with ryan - otherwise he would have "given" ryan the victory.

That made me laugh...
How much time Hall take off after London? He could have taken off as much as a month, so that owuld have him only having done a few weeks of training. So almost breaking 30:00 off of a couple weeks of training isn't bad at all.
Yeah times and places don't matter in racing. It's really something more zen, ethereal, and indescribable.
The winner, Harroufi, ran a marathon in Hamburg one month ago and no one is making excuses for him. Let's face it -- it was a disappointing outing for Hall. We'll still be rooting for him in Beijing but call a spade a spade.
Stop making excuses!
You can throw in as many variables as you want; 30:07 for a 2:06 marathoner looking to win an Olympic medal is sub par. Is there any doubt that Geb, Lel, Limo, Samuel Wanjiru, Abderrahim Goumri, William Kipsang of Emmanuel Mutai would have either won that race or would have been competing for the victory? I think Ritz, Adbi or Meb would have been in the mix; in fact Frank Shorter and Alberto Salazar would have done better. Finishing almost 2 minutes behind guys who are unlikely to make their country’s Olympic team in any event is not good.
I am not saying that this says anything bad about how Hall will do in the Olympic marathon, but today’s race was clearly a bad one.

Does anybody remember that KK used to do this in just about every non-marathon race he ran in his heyday? When will you people get it? Who cares about Boulder Boulder?
Let me correct myself by adding that I meant converting to a track at sea level in perfect conditions. Look at the following pasted from the host websites:
2008 Payton Jordan Invite: #19 Edwardo Torres ,Reebok, 28:33.89
2008 Bolder Boulder 19. Ed Torres, USA, 30:42
AND
2008 Payton Jordan: 11 Alejandro Suarez, Unattached, 28:06.43
2008 Bolder Boulder: 9. Alejandro Suarez ($900), Mexico, 29:35
AND
Payton Jordan: 6 Juan Carlos Romero, Unattached, 27:47.46
Bolder Race: 10. Juan Carlos Romero ($800), Mexico, 29:43
I ask this honestly.
What is wrong with the American distance running fan? Are you so short-sighted and limited to continue to question - even DOUBT - Ryan Hall based upon a stupid road 10k at altitude about month after he just ran 2:06!!!!!!!!!!!
What is wrong with you people? I'm serious. You must have tiny little brains. Infinitesimal pea brains who can't recall as far back as April? Who struggle to understand that Ryan Hall in the span of 6 months ran and won the Olympic trials marathon in 2:09 and finished 6th at London in 2:06, running the fasted American born marathon in history?
Has it come to this? Is Letsrun really this dumb? Are you people putting me on? Really, tell me. You must be...it's a joke...right?
I can't read any of this any more. A kid runs 2:06 and a month later you're criticizing his 10k race at some ridiculous little mountain town where people drink liquid wheat grass...where people sleep under bridges with million dollar trust funds.
Common Letsrun...I have more faith in you. I did. Here's my message to Ryan Hall...You can bomb every race for the rest of your life - and you're still one of the greatest American born marathoners, if not the greatest (yes, already!) - this country has yet seen.
Ritz, Meb, Abdi, Culpepper - I'm comfortable in wagering that none of you will even come close to what Ryan Hall has already done in the marathon. Not even close...
So let's give credit where credit is due. Tomorrow, no one will even remember Bolder Boulder...
THIS IS THE MOST CORRECT POST 'EVER' GIVEN ON LETSRUN.COM IN REGARDS TO THE IDIOTIC COMMENTS THESE PEOPLE LEAVE ON HERE ABOUT VERY GOOD RUNNERS, HALL, WITHOUT QUESTION, BEING THE VERY BEST. THE BB COURSE IS NOT EASY, TO BOOT IS RUN AT OVER 5400FT. 'ALL' RUNNERS HAVE BAD DAYS, NOONE IS CONSTANTLY ON. THESE SAME IDIOTS WERE TALKING TRASH ABOUT GEB WHEN HE DROPPED OUT OF LONDON, THAN PAULA AT ATHENS. AGAIN, I HIGHLY DOUBT ANYONE WILL HAVE A MORE FACTUAL POST ON THIS SITE THAN THE ONE YOU JUST WROTE ADSKLJD. THANKS
Our bridges have trust funds?
Maybe he meant bridges with truss funds?
Nice...you say a guy had a bad race and all of a sudden we're huge detractors and think he's a horrible runner? And what's with the attacks on Boulder? One local runner was better than Ryan today (maybe chugging wheatgrass under the bridge works?). I guess the cult of Ryan is growing -- it's becoming like the Red Sox. You say they had a bad game and everyone takes it personally.
Of course we haven't forgotten Hall's wonderful stretch with the AR half-marathon in Houston, the dominating performance in Central Park, and his 5th place in London. Has anything been said that contradicts this?
But what are we supposed to say about his race today? Great race Ryan...go get em? Give me a break. It's simpleminded to equate a criticism of a race to an attack on someone's running career.
My point is this: he had a subpar race today. That is the end of it. It is not a criticism of what he's accomplished. It's an opinion of his performance today.
no one has mentioned that fact that this was a NO drug test race...I'm sure some dirty Africans showed up. Case in point, Hall beat by a guy he destroyed by 6 min in the marathon just a few months ago. A 4:20 first mile and nobody up front looked like they died....c'mon. I smell dirty athletes up front. And yes, the US team didn't have their greatest day, but shite happens.
give me a break, Hmmmmmm.
you know what you're supposed to say about today? not much at all.
And for the record: you really don't have the right to criticize Hall about any race, ever.
go back up to the above thread where the guy says you people are fools.
