BMI doesn't take into account all factors. I have a small frame. I just do. My goal is not to be "skinny." I want to be fit and be at a weight that's good for my running, etc.

18.7 is really not close to anorexic at all.
18.5-24.9 is "normal" weight. Under 18.5 is just "underweight", not anorexic.
It's pretty understandable that a runner would be underweight compared to other people.
Yes, there are certainly runners with anorexia (no, I am not one of them), but you only add to the confusion about HEALTHY female runners when you make ignorant statements like saying that 109 lbs at 5'4" is close to anorexia if there's no other signs of disordered eating.
Even men get this BS. I put up with that crap for fifty years, I was 5'10" and weighed betwen 144-140.
I finally had enough and came back with retorts such as "you look flabby, are you starting to work out?" Or, "y ou are a bit overweight, could you lend me ten lbs or so?" Or, "we realy don't know each other very well, why would you be concerned since I am the picture of good health?" Dead silence on all of these.

As for the jealousy thing, I suppose it's possible. This woman is about 5'2" and weighs 120ish pounds. She's a stocky build, but not "fat." She has no kids, about 45 y.o.,I'm 34. She trains hard (for her), but barely eats and is clueless about nutrition. My immediate reaction was that I'd be considered cruel if I outwardly questioned why she hasn't lost more fat given that she's training for a half Ironman.
I'm going to a dinner party tomorrow night that she & her hubby are attending, and I'm bringing appetizers. I'm torn between celery stick w/ fat free ranch dip or turkey slices wrapped in lettuce leaves...
2/10
...and since when do we look to the government for nutrition wisdom... pyramids, triangles, BS
No, I'm not a troll. The comment about the lettuce leaves just reflects my desire to F with her a little bit now that she's going around talking trash.
You know what would really F with her? Bring a delicious, high fat appetizer and let her see you eating it. The only thing more annoying to fat people than a skinny bitch who's obsessed with her diet is a skinny bitch who can eat whatever she wants and enjoys it.
That's the crazy thing. Although I generally eat healthful things, I've been known to down a Ben & Jerry's or 2 - in front of her, even! I'm with you though. I'll bring hot cheesy artichoke dip with toasted bread.
You can bring ME hot cheesy artichoke dip!
Whoa, let's keep this PG please.

Flirting with her husband should do the trick.
BMI is bullshit. It is more geared to the general (fatter) public. Someone should come up with a formula that adjusts based on muscle mass or something...then again, measuring BF% is not overly easy since most methods of testing are fairly inaccurate.
As long as you feel comfortable with your body, that's all that matters. Just ignore those comments, or translate them in your mind into compliments...because that is all they are...back-handed compliments. Surrounding yourself with friends who are like-minded as far as fitness and nutrition helps since they will never make comments to you like that.
hey,
where are the pics?
Ha, exactly. I actually did "retaliate" one time. Back then I was running 90 mpw, was 155 lbs at 6'1". At a party there was one of these people talking about how she ran 4:45 in her last marathon and now she felt she had broken into the territory where she was a "real" runner.
Somebody asked me, "you run too, don't you?"
- "Yeah."
"So what's your last marathon time?"
- "2:38"
The 4:45 runner said, "yeah, but you obviously overdo it."
- "How so?"
"Well, I mean, look at you, you're too skinny."
- "Or maybe you're too fat."
The whole crowd standing around erupted in accusations of rudeness. I just walked away from that group, but I have friends who jokingly still remind me of that episode even now, 2 years later. Total double standard.
This kind of stuff is really starting to piss me off....we live in the type of society today where people can be considered "fit" when they are actually not at all....and serious distance runners who are actually fit get accused of being "too skinny" "anorexic"....when they are actually in a ton better shape than the people who are saying it to them.......people care way too much about what other people think they say "I wanna be a good runner, but i dont really wanna be too skinny".........then they dont really want to be a good runner....there is a kid on my high school track team who runs distance but he wants to look like a football player, he benches 245 and keeps liftin like crazy, hes in good shape but he always tells me at practice "you should do more weight lifting and less running" I say sarcastically "thats why all of the football players can beat me in the 3200." he cares way to much about what people think of him. I think we should just not care about what we look like and care about how fast we are, if your hammering 100+ mile weeks your going to be skinny but very fast, id rather be fast than look "healthy" or "buff" or "weigh more". screw everybody else just think about your self....Like Quenton Cassidy said "The lean wolf leads the Pack"
Awesome, man! She definitely opened herself up to that.
i love you
You are skinny, but not too skinny! I agree that people have a strong misconception of a good body size. Most people are overweight...I think the statistic is something like 2/3 of adults over 40...something like that...idk...Anyway, I get that reaction sometimes, too. People assume you're anorexic, if you don't partake in the "normal" fare of hamburgers, fries, and milk shakes. While I know the media often places impossible thinness expectations on women through air-brushed photographs, the ubiquitous presence of "[insert name of naturally thin actress] is anorexic!" at grocery store checkout counters, leaves many to think that every naturally-thin person is anorexic! In your situation, I think it really gets down to jealousy...Don't listen to her! Keep up the healthy habits...it will pay off, especially as you get older...
this is still pissing me off as I deal with this every day at work when the donuts come out
I am not a pro, I am medicre at best, often place in AG or overall but I love to run and take it seriously as its something I love. It is a 'hobby'. But in this passtime, to do it well, it shows in your body. If you want to be the best runner that you can be, you are both burning the extra calories and eating well. If I decided I wanted to be the best scrapbooker ever, then Id be on scrapbooking websites instead and it wouldnt matter if I weighed 200lbs.Or knitter, or gardener, or golfer, etc. But if running is your 'hobby'that you take seriously, it will show on your body. I find people that dont run/go to gym/walk etc seem to feel guilty in the presence of people that do and to make themselves feel better about not doing the bare minimum to be healthy, they find it easier to ridicule.
I never told anyone at work that I run til I made the mistake this week of answering truthfully when asked what I did on my days off, as I was off a few days to run Boston. When I told them I ran the Boston marathon, I instantly regretted it. My boss was super cool, 'got it' and asked my time as her brother runs, but the rest (all fatties) since then, rather than say Congrats, have treated me like a leper. Fcuk em. There are a million reasons why I do it and love it and I dont need to account to coworkers.
Hi foreal,
I am 5'4 as well and I weigh 103 pounds. Some of my larger girl friends will sometimes make comments about my physical appearance and sometimes it can get rather annoying. What is immeasurably more annoying, however, is a grown woman who is so desperate for attention that she looks for positive reinforcement on a site that is frequented mainly by males. and generally young males. You are 34 and you are a mother. Grow up. I think you should take a vacation from letsrun and spend your time differently, maybe even read to your kids? Perhaps then you will give them a chance to not turn out as vapid and pathetic as you.
Sincerely,
Geezus
