loved by yuppies who refer to themsleves progressives because it makes them feel good.
tolerated by black people for some unknown reason.
universally disliked and known for its "style over substance" by everyone else.
Dane Cook's earlier stuff was good. Lately, I can listen to his stuff while driving and mostly smirk and laugh, but I could not do that with a Mitch Hedberg or I would get in an accident.
I think a few of Dane's strengths are his kind of "everyman" persona with his target audience. College-age kids feel like they could hang out with him.
Comedy-wise, I laugh at a lot at his word choices, during a joke. Sometimes, it's overdone (he did a bit about a "purhcase" and receiving change after he handed the woman the "currency"), but a lot of times, I really like his word choices. They are dictionary-level words in terms of comedy, but they work b/c they're unexpected and outrageous.
What I think are his problems as of late, are that he really hooks onto audience reaction and doesn't let a joke die. It's very human of him to enjoy the joke along with everyone else, but he'll repeat the punch line a bunch of times or go back to the voice he created. It's not funny anymore. One of my least favorite skits was about car alarms and he made up a song with different voices to the sounds of a car alarm. He thought it was hysterical.
Can't knock the man's energy though. He puts on a show. I could see why the Hedberg-fanatics on this board would hate him. Total opposite.
The problem with Dane Cooks jokes is that they take some sort of sense of humor to comprehend...

people are too much
First it was cool and hip to think Dane Cook was funny. Then everyone thought he was funny and jumped the shark. But, too many people thought he was funny, and everyone couldn't like the same person, so everyone jumped the ship.
Dane's funny, maybe not the "funniest" but you can't sit there and not laugh at a show of his. Part of what he does is showmanship.
Keep telling yourself that you're an "individual" and hate the status quo of thinking Dane Cook's funny, voting for Barack Obama, drinking Sam Adams, going to church, jogging, and "sell out" bands.
It's so funny watching all of you people try to prove you're an individual by telling everyone else they're wrong rather than making your own spot. Good job tools.
Thanks for enlightening us. Had it ever occurred to you that the reason sooooo many people don't like Dane Cook is because those people actually think he's NOT FUNNY? I watched a Dane Cook stand up special on comedy central once because I heard his name alot and assumed he was worth watching. I sat there for 30 mins bored to death and cracked a smile once or twice during the whole routine. Then I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and watched his most recent stand up special on CC. Same thing happened. The dude just isn't funny.
So when I hear people talking about how much Dane Cook irritates them, I think "Oh good, so other people noticed too."
what makes you a comedy critic?
I live in chicago (home of improv comedy) and I see many shows a year. How many should one see to become a "critic"?

Exactly. I would occasionally see the guy's stand-up special on television (as I recall, it was in Boston), and was really surprised that such a lousy performer was filling the stands and getting a television gig. I had no idea who the guy was, and certainly had no idea that it was hip to like or dislike the guy. In fact, I was surprised to discover later that he actually had a lot of fans. I found his routine to be uncomfortably unfunny -- kind of like watching the routine of Robert de Niro's character Rupert Pupkin, the would-be stand-up comic in "The King of Comedy."
Didn't even smile.

Hey, I like Sam Adams. Is that good or bad?
His new stuff just sucks it takes him 5mins to actually get to the funny part, if it actually is funny.

Apparently, it means you're part of the "status quo," which leaves you vulnerable to people who are trying to express their individuality by attacking your choice of beer.
As for me, I can't stand the taste of beer. I think that places me above the fray, unless my taste buds are just resolutely countercultural.
Dane Cook is the Dean Kamazes of stand-up comedy - another example of the fact that self-promotion is sometimes more important than talent.
The latest news out of Boston, Dane Cook to be crowned worst comedian.

i didnt find that very funny...but that is PROOF that many people do. It has a 4 star rating by around 12k people. And has 40k people who have made it a favorite link. So we can't say everyone hates him because it's far from the truth.

The exact same thing happened to me on Saturday. I watched that thing, didn't laugh a bit, and my friends didn't really laugh either even the ones who were Dane Cook fans. No complaints when someone asked to change the channel. The only thing I ever had against him was those terrible MLB postseason ads, and how he supposedly is a Sox fan. Still, if it had been funny I would be a Dane fan, but it wasn't plain and simple.
Right, his new stuff is god awful. He just thinks that the fact that he is Dane Cook will make people laugh (the majority of the people in attendance for his new Comedy Central show did just that). Harmful if Swallowed has some awesome stuff on it, check it out. By just getting the CD you don't have to watch him do all the crap he likes to do now on stage.
