I am sad to say that this extremely racist post made me laugh out loud. I am hoping it is just because I think the word retarded is funny.

Not every DI team gets unbelievable amounts of gear. Teams have budgets and while a few teams can offer their runners an endless supply of shoes, most can not get altitude tents or underwater treadmills for their athletes. In fact, most teams can only get a few pairs of shoes each year for each of their guys.

I doubt he will bring anymore attention to the sport than he is right now for this reason. People dont like assholes for one thing. If he did get the nations attention, once people realized how much of a dick he was he would change fans opinion of how runners are. Secondly, he's hideous. You couldnt put his face on anything, because its down right offensive.

Some people here are incredibly rediculous, and will finally be able to shut their mouths up this summer.

I agree he's a little quirky. But you've got to be excited about what he could possibly do in the sport of running. What I can't understand is why people hate him so deeply. Like why do people hate HIM more than any other runner on all of Letsrun? Some people hate him for talking on his phone behind Goucher in an interview...like he f***ing set babies on fire or something.

Got a serious question. Rupp went to Europe and other places on Nike's dime, yes? Didn't he pay back only like 4k. Basically, was it amount not nearly close to what the true cost probably was?

Galen Rupp + Keara Sammons(google her name sometime). It is nice that he is a good runner and all, but you want to really be jealous of the guy check out that gorgeous brunette.

"Amateurism" in the NCAA is a joke.

And I can't believe people try to defend this venomous behavior as something other than the result of jealousy. It's human nature to be jealous, we're all jealous of something. By opening our minds and educating ourselves we can try to become bigger people and not be jealous of the petty things, like a runner with more talent and better connections.

And most of are not jealous of such petty things. But you get a message board with 100,000 readers and you're bound to have a handful of jealous ones who get all worked up and start going backwards in evolution. I love how people are picking on the way he talks or moves, or that he talked on his cell phone while someone else was being interviewed.

There are a small handful of dudes who seriously have tunnel vision when it comes to there own thought process. The first step in becoming less jealous is to realize when you are.

Right, and I'm sure all those shallow and regressive cretins who don't care for Mike Tyson and Tanya Harding are just jealous too.

I think any college athlete with rupps talent should have access to the best facilities, coaches, etc, they should also have to follow the same NCAA rules. Rupp is a great runner, period. Ryan Hall is a great runner, period. The difference is that one is a nitwit, and one is not. Hall is even a little goofy with his religion, rupp is just plain goofy.

I'm not saying that some people aren't actually jealous of a great athlete's ability, wouldn't any runner want to have Geb or Wanjiru's talent? I just haven't seen much of anything that qualifies as legitimate jealousy of rupp on letsrun. Can one have an opinion about a well know runner that is anything other than doting fanboy adoration? And honestly, what's it to you if someone just doesn't like rupp? Does that destroy the fabric of your universe?

What's apparent is that some of you fanboy-rupp kooks are so sensitive about you're hero worship that you're mistaking poking fun a dork for some kind of bitter jealousy.

You're kind of thick, and your post was dumb. Try actually reading a post before responding. I'd love to have Rupp's talent, or Hall's, or Geb's, or... Wouldn't you? Exactly where did I infer that I'd take one over the other?

We had access to the latest in sports medicine, training techniques, shoes, etc., and we couldn't even qualify for Nationals XC (we did in the recent past but not when I was there).The point is that if Oregon and Rupp can support their runners really well then the rest of the D1's better do it or they will lose all their prospects to Oregon. It's good for someone to set the bar high and let the rest chase it.Some guy mentioned Rupp possibly not progressing? If he was Kenyan would you say the same thing? Of course he has a chance at not progressing but he appears to have a substantially higher chance of being the best ever in America. He has progressed and if he has the kind of talent that I think he does he will break 27 in a couple of years. If he doesn't then the minimum that Rupp will have done is set the standard for other prodigies to be given the star treatment, regardless of idiosyncratic tendencies while being filmed with a hand held camera, and that my friend will be more than any runner has done in a long, long time.Rupp, if you look past the geeky facade, is our sport's big chance to pave the way for other talent to be discovered and paid. who cares? really? he's better than everybody here, so I'm sick of the argument that he gets afforded more opportunities than most college kids. I'm glad they are careful with him and I really hope he pans out, he's quite a talented guy.

The world need more Galen Rupp's.

Rupp has been given more opportunity than most runners in the US, maybe all. That's great for him and hopefully it leads to him breaking major records. It would be great if he was ontop of a major medal stand, great for the US.

But, he is not on a level playing field with the rest of NCAA athletes. He made the choice to go pro after High School. Maybe the worked things out so he could give back a little money, but he had a professional coach and had his way paid by a shoe company. So he didn't get a salary, he still made the choice to be a Pro, even if it was an underpaid pro. He should live with that and stay out of the NCAA.

The NCAA should be a stepping stone to a higher athletic level. Not all athletes make it from High School to College, and not all college athletes go pro. He skipped NCAA and went straight pro. Even now after he swindled his way into the NCAA he is training as a pro under the disguise of running for Oregon. He should just be fair and honest and race those at his support level and leave the NCAA. Let NCAA athletes compete against each other for NCAA titles, and keep pros at the National and world level. Rupp and Salazar's willing to take advantage of the NCAA system speaks to their willingness to possible take advantage of other rules. It makes me question their morals.
