An elite runner has only so many top level performances in him. And in so much as a guy like Alan has to depend on his sport to make a living, it would be judicious of him to pick his races and the efforts he doles out. Having said that, he beat MEB at the Oly trials, he finished a very respectable 12th at the Olympic marathon in deplorable conditions (yes, he went out slow by design, but so did Meb), and he has pushed to the wall on several occasions (including the Bolder Boulder effort alluded to earlier). I don't think he ever slacks, but he is mature enough to know his limits and wise enough to choose his battles.
I would agree that this is a stupid thread. Long distance running his hard no matter what, and you don't have that many great efforts in you, either during the season or over the years. This isn't like other sports, such as baseball or basketball.
