Valby competed and ran well. I'm sure she's not devastated. I agree with a poster above who said she may have to move to the marathon but I think she should give the 10K 2-3 years first to see what pro coaching does for her.
For those criticizing the race (and Valby) as slow, be realistic. A quick weather check shows the temp at race time was still close to 80F, with 81% humidity. The temps at the stadium may be a little higher or lower, I don't know. In those conditions, a fast race was very unlikely. I don't know what the temps were for the mens' 10000m, but if the men's race was cooler, it can explain the mens' race being comparatively faster. I know that at least southern Europe is having something of a heat wave, and it may be making Paris temps a bit higher also.
Bottom line is it was her first international race, she acquitted herself quite well against the best in the world, and now she knows where she stands, and what she needs to do to challenge for medals.
Nobody, including her, thought she would medal. Although, I'm impressed that she made that move late in the race anyway.
She stayed in lane 2 the entire race. She also tried overtaking on turns.
She was in lane one but in the outside. I don't think she should have taken the lead but it was nice seeing her there. Very inspirational. She's new to international competition so I didn't expect her to medal but give her some time and she will be doing what Fisher is currently doing. She will be fine not just because she's pretty and fast but because she also has potential to do well.
