At least the final won’t be at 14 minute pace. The expected hot pace will thin them out quickly. But yes, this should be a textbook example of why they need to rethink only two heats with 40+ guys. There’s no perfect solution to 5k heats, but today’s heats were utter disasters.
Was anyone else impressed by Foppen's somersault? I would definitely have just brutally faceplanted there. Distance runners are notorious for being uncoordinated and goofy, but he took that fall like a UFC fighter.
Why wasn't this a problem in the women's heats? (I didn't watch them) Did they also have 20 people per heat? Did the women take it out faster or they just don't get as physical?

there was 20 runners in each heat of the women's 5k but it wasn't a problem because the overall depth wasn't as high as in the men's event

Yeah, look at the times in the womens heats. 10 women in the 1st heat and 12 women in the 2nd heat were running the qualification, then there was an entirely different race behind them separated by a lot of time and space.
Hay from France was 100% responsible for the group of 4 falling in Heat 1. Cut off Mills without being clear of him, and then Mills went down, which then took out the others.
Mills does not deserve to advance. Bro had the most dramatic fall looking like he was grabbing the other runner’s legs. It’s a shame he was able to protest after it was his fault that many runners fell.
