From the self proclaimed and famous interview “I recruit and develop Americans.” Sean Carlson has cut 9 American men from the Colorado roster, without an attempt to develop the athletes at all. Colorado is known for having their American runners being built and trained to be tough as nails.

Another power hungry coach that doesn’t care about his image of being a good coach vs buying a roster. I guess Carlson has decided to follow the wave of the foreign train. Unfortunately it seems the glory days of Covid are in the past.
What do my fellow Buff Alum think about this mass exodus of athletes from Colorado?
This is so full of speculation and opinion. I’m calling BS…you don’t even have proof they were “cut”. A coach doesn’t put anyone in the portal, you put yourself in the portal.
So Georgia cuts 4 guys that can barely break 15:00 and letsrun loses their mind (5+ pages), but Colorado cuts 9 guys , one of which has broken 14:00, and LetsRun is acting like it’s no big deal. Got it.

It sucks for the kids especially with the semester starting in less than a month, but unfortunately, this is the nature of the sport. If an incoming coach wants to construct a "win now" roster instead of develop, that's his choice. Nobody is owed a roster spot. Hope those kids can bounce back, I'm sure this is devastating for them.

Probably a good time for Derouin to go back to the triathlon. He got down to 29:13 this year as a sophomore. This may be fast enough for the triathlon. Top guys are running sub 28 however. Maybe he needs another year.
Little off topic...but I wonder how the Carlson and Keegan Smith relationship is going to go.
Knoxville kid who I don't think gave much thought to going to UT now has to run for Carlson. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the transfer portal before January.

It’s going to be hard for him to be in the transfer portal when he’s still gonna be in high school
CU had 26 men on their xc roster last fall. They have a year to get down to 17. That combined with wanting to bring in his guys leaves little choice, no?

100% they were cut. Carlson’s excuse was that it was forced by administration. Most were cut literally a couple hours before the portal closed for them. One athlete cut was regional qualifier in track and has highest GPA in the program.
I'm shocked these guys got on the team at CU to begin with. I actually think its very cool Wetmore gave them a chance as I'm a big believer that a 4:20s/9:20s guy can actually be developed into quite a good runner over 5y. But man... the way Letsrun makes it seem, you have to be a 9 flat guy to run D3... yet here is a list of guys MUCH slower than that in high shcool who were running for a D1 powerhouse. I find that awesome.
Isn't the 17 athletes thing for scholarship athletes? If these kids aren't getting scholarships who cares if they are out there training to get better?

He's still in high school? Didn't he commit like a year ago? That's actually a real good thing for both parties involved.
May I offer the following: As a walk on in the early seventies, I was told by a new hire/coach that I did not fit in his plans for cross country and track. I was cut.
I was angry, upped my mileage, and determined to prove him wrong. A month later, at the new coach's time trial I made the team. A little fire in the gut can reverse their CU future.

Keegan is a HS senior. He isn’t at CU yet, and might reconsider going there now that there was a coaching change
When a lion takes over a pride whats the first thing he does? He kills all the existing cubs and banishes the juveniles. Its harsh but its nature.
After that he kills the hyena matriarch to serve notice the days of bullsh!te are over.
When was the last time a lion led an XC team to finish top 3 at NCAA’s?Seriously all of this faux masculine alpha nonsense is garbage. All of this animal instinct, pack leadership stuff always has and always will reek of phony garbage.
For my entire 15+ years following the sport CU was always the home to gritty salt of the earth runners coming through and driving CU to success at the highest level. Many of their best runners were no-bodies who would finish top 45 at NCAA’s when it mattered most. This move is a declaration against the spirit of the program that Wetmore created. Moreover, many of those walk on kids have the right attitude, there is no financial incentive for them to be there, just pure love of the sport. They help cultivate a good locker room. Back when I was in college, some of our walk-ons became some of the best team leaders and best guys to work with.
Some of the runners that were let go had some real quality to them. I hope they have the chance to line up against CU this year. Finally, I really hope to see this guy fail as a coach.
That really sucks, but... if it were you, what would you do?
If you were suddenly the HC at CU what do you do knowing that you probably have 3 years to make a BIG showing or you are out? Also knowing the new NCAA rules are coming.
For me, I would work with the current squad but I would be very upfront about expectations and whether I was keeping anyone performing under a certain level.
His approach maybe the more honest approach. He's not delaying the inevitable.
