So Schul doing his 20x400m workout was right in the sweet spot for him- a short enough repetition that he could still maintain speed/volume for an entire session?
Using him as the example- could anyone argue that his 20x400m would have been better as 8x1000m or even 80x100m for his 5k performance in 1964?
At what point in Schul's development was he doing this workout? Was it high school? Was he a freshman? or was it when he was a college runner?
All too often I see HS coaches looking at the workouts of elite, mature runners and having their HS runners do them. That is a bad, bad thing.
Agreed. As Schul likely performed it, 20 x 400m is a very elite workout.
The perplexed coach would do well by picking up any used copy on Amazon of Daniels Running Formula.
Later in life Schul was a college coach at Wright State for a decade or so. In his book, he talks about using his aerobic interval method with his college runners. Don't know if he ever coached high school
