His fiance, not his wife? It's been three years my man! The world is charged with the grandeur of God. A richer life is available to you in commitment--to marriage and to fatherhood.
To paraphase what I read that a cardiac surgeon said, "...alcohol is poison for every cell in your body..." You may still want to have a drink, and/or still drink, there is no way that it helpsor improves your athletic performances , let alone your life in general.
It’s not hard to avoid alcohol. I go long periods of time without alcohol. The month of June I had zero drinks. The month of July I went to an art festival and had 2 drinks. Then I had brunch this morning and had 2 drinks.
I'd say it's easy for most people. But there are genetic and personality factors to consider. If you have an addictive personality it might be difficult. And then, some people who just get hit by alcohol differently. It's hard to explain, you almost have to see it to understand. I have a good friend that almost literally lights up when he has one drink. His eyes get wide and glossy right away, and he can't stop at 1. Then he gets hammered quickly and acts ridiculous. Its hard to be around him when hes drunk. Extremely flirtatious with just about any woman thats nearby, even if their boyfriend/husband is right there.
What makes it even more bizarre is that he is a very intelligent, very functional guy. Very organized and on top of things. Holds a Healthcare job that must pay 6 figures. Alcohol just brings out the beast in him.
Fortunately he's been 100% sober and back to running for at least a year now. Seems to be straightening out.
This board specifically attracts people with weird judgments and comments, not sure it's representative of Americans as a whole. I think most Americans drink plenty but also don't care if others do/don't.
i don't think people are judging people who drink. just saying a professional runner giving it up for 3 months is not noteworthy.
and if he doesn't drink anyway, as the poster above just said, how are his coach and fiancee sharing in a sacrifice to not drink as well?
it just sounds like they are digging for something to talk about when there isn't much there. which i guess is what writers do. always need an interesting narrative.
I only drink when in social situations. I never drink a beer just sitting around at night and I rarely will even bother with wine with dinner.
I could easily just order a soft drink when out with friends, but honestly unless I have a purpose to not have my 2-3 beers per week I dont really see why I'd give it up.
For me it would be like being asked to give up any other something in my diet. Could I give up meat/sugar/carbs/whatever.. for X amount of time? The answer is YES I could, but why?
this is not a sacrifice at all. sorry. this story is not worth the ink it's printed on. we're talking about people whose job it is to get 100% out of their body.
All it says to me it's he has a problem with alcohol... I did too, but I went three of years without drinking and now infrequently have a drink or two
