Am I in the minority in thinking Grant has a better chance in the 10,000? He’s been closer to medals in the past and the 5K is arguably deeper with Krop, Jakob, Luis G who can all close much faster than Fisher

He does theoretically yes. But the Ugandans and Ethiopians take the 10,000 more seriously and seem to be better at it. Every year the 5,000 seems crazy loaded but then it’s Jakob Krop and ???? Maybe the Ethiopians have this young team to set up Gebrhiwet. It certainly would make sense as his kick off a slow race is merely OK, but off a fast pace is incredible. If that is the reason for the shift I withdraw my complaint. But if you have Mehary and Yihune jogging around and then showing off their mediocre tactics…
Does anyone know how it works for the Olympics? Does Ethiopia have to list 4 names for the 5000 now? I wish the Olympics would let them use some common sense and just say - Here are the Olympians for the 10 and 5k and our reserves, but we're not sure exactly who is going to run the 5000. We'll let you know who runs the 5000 after the 10,000 takes place.
Not a good idea at all. This means that some nations will have triple the amount of reserves that others have (a full 10k team + reserves for both the 10k and the 5k vs just 5k+reserves.).
This is such a baffling decision that it makes me wonder if a major sponsor or rival agent bribed the official(s) to take Yomif out of the picture so [fill in name of Western athlete] has a better shot at medaling. Biniam is not in the same league as Yomif this year.
I am really, really glad in the US top 3 go to the olympics. No exceptions. Fairest system on the planet. Imagine leaving the decision up to some fat cats --- ugh.
Imagine leaving the decision up to who get tripped up, food posoning, a small injury etc. The US system is no guarantee that the top 3 gets to go, just the 3 best placements on a random meet, where the tactics of the race and qualities of the winners might be nothing like the real deal.
I get the kid is uber talented, but taking a gold medal contender out and replacing him with who could very well end up being another sacrificial lamb for Gebrhiwet does not make a lot of sense. Between him and Yihune, if they can’t pace Gebrhiewt to win anything but a gold, this is gonna be a worse disappointment than last year when the three Ethiopians faded to irrelevance the last 200.
There’s no way they don’t plan on the pace being hot from the gun, right? If they start with a 2:40 first km, you might as well take the last 10 laps to engrave Jakob’s name on the gold medal.
Engrave The legend with a kid and a dad? Never gonna happen!
The idea must be to pace Gebrhiwet, Although very unfair to Kejelcha, it might increase the chance of an Erhiopian gold/silver. Gonna be highly interesting to see Jakob vs. Hagos on a last lap if this plays out as intended, sub 12 at the bell.

When the team was initially released. Barega was the reserve in the 5000.
If I was Ethioia, I 100% would enter a sacrificial lamb in the 5000 and make them rabbit. Enter your best two and a rabbit. Either that or hand the gold to Jakob.
If they weren't going to go off of time, they might be better off putting Girma in there as he might have a chance for a medal if it's tactical but it looks like they don't want anyone doubling unless it's Tsegay who can triple. :) Ethiopia treating the Olympic 5000 like it's a participation event.
And wath can Ethiopians do? Block The legend, put him between 3 of them, and not let him escape? All gonna look, like kids against Jakob, again.

Ok let's raise our expectations from the Ethiopians, Two of them will set a WR pace and after what? Hagos will escape Jakob and take down the WR at the Olympics. Even if I see it, I won't believe. Yes, it's going to be interesting to see, but what I see ahead is 99% against 1%

The weather will play a role. If the pace is 12:55ish and a fast final 400m yields a 12:50, then we shall be entertained, maybe almost as much as 21 years ago in Paris when possibly the 3 best runners in history waged a battle for World Championship Gold in a 12:52 race.
He’s really good no doubt and young (more likely 19 than 17 as Ethiopian media listed him at 18 when he emerged). That being said Kejelcha is the better athlete now by some margin.
So why do you think they made the decision? Maybe they see something in the kid. Maybe they are tired of Kejelcha usually underperforming in global chamionships. It does seem a bit unexpected, but this kid is capable of getting a medal.
Can only be this. Year after year of Bubbles Kejelcha showing up as either the fastest guy in the world then jogging around with the pack in 65's before getting biffed in the final 600m of a 13.10 race, someone was finally like "yeah maybe it's time to give someone else their chance".

All I will say is this, if it comes down to anyone vs Jakob on the final lap, the result will be no different to the last 2 world finals. If the Ethiopians are going to do any damage they need to from 2000-4000m which is something they historically and inexplicably have had little interest in doing - right back to even the Farah era.
Who would have thought that 21 years later 2 of the 3 medalists from the 2003 Paris World Championships 5000m would be back in Paris competing in the marathon?

They should watch that 2003 Paris 5000m over and over. Hicham was defeated and Jakob can be defeated. But they have to go to war to do it.

Everyone can be defeated, but the most difficult thing is to defeat Jakob in 5000m. Thay did it once in Doha, when Jakob was so yonge, and not enough experienced. I can't see that happening in Paris in few days.
As great as Kejelcha is, as great as his times and his role in pushing the pace after the pacer has dropped out and pushing Jakob to the line in the 3k at Pre last year, he has these results in major championships:
Who is the clean WR holder? Someone from the past? Jakob has no chance against retired runners, agree. Against all today runners he has huge chances to win.

Exactly - and despite knowing this they NEVER do. Like never. Even when they finally managed to beat Farah over the 5 they didn't do it either and got lucky that Farah was right at the end of his best 12.5 lap days.
