The classic progression is a 1500m star in high school or college who has maxed out their speed and moved up to 5000m/10,000m. Or ditto for 5000m/10,000m up to the marathon.
Has it ever gone the opposite way?
The only person who comes to mind is Fred Kerley dropping from 400m to 100m.
What HS kid maxed out his speed and became a 5/10 runner?

Okay, probably not in high school. More college or early in their pro career. I kind of assume that most kids who are superstars in the mile are actually going to be future 10k stars. The future milers are excelling in the 800m, or even lower.

Same thing. Who went from being a superstar in the 1500m/mile to being a star at 10k?
I did. I went from running 40 minute 5ks to running 4 minute 800s. Get 5x more tail now (I got 0 tail before)
Yeah, there’s a famously elite one armed bench presser on this site who went from unhappy distance runner (53 sec 400 rumor has it) to elite hand timed 10 meter dash runner.
If you’re lucky you might catch him checking out his vertical on a basketball net of a local Walmart

Speaking of Jenny Simpson, her old rival Anna Willard also successfully moved down to the 1500 and 800 from the steeple. She just wasn't nearly as good as Simpson.
I have my own personal story. I wasn't allowed to run anything but the 1600 and 800 in middle school. Of course, I wanted to be a sprinter but the assistant coach had some grand design for me. Eventually they let me run a few open 400s in 8th grade, but they still never let me run a 100/200. I did run a high 2:08 solo 800 in 8th grade and a 5:02ish 1600 if I recall.
Long story short, I was recruited at a small DI college on a (small) scholarship as a 100m runner and eventually ran sub 10.30.
